For those that shower with the Apple Watch, etc., do you have to set the 'water' option PRIOR to going into water (shower, washing dishes, swimming, etc.)?

Or, can I get the watch wet, then use the water symbol (where you scroll up on the watch face) and select it to then extract water?

Just to clarify for others, this is only for the Apple Watch Series 2 which is waterproof for up to 50 meters. The original Apple Watch and Series 1 are not recommended to be submerged in water by Apple, as they are technically only splash proof.

As to your question, the water symbol is used to extract water from the speaker. It's supposed to be used once you're out of the water so that you can empty the water from the speaker hole to hear notifications and other sound emanating from the watch better. When in that mode the watch plays various sounds to release water from the speaker hole. But it's not meant to be used while in water.

...ah, that makes sense. I kept thinking, if someone pushed someone in the pool, by accident - LOL - and that water option on their Apple Watch wasn't on, that could end up being awful!

The water icon just locks the screen and pushes water out of the speaker when you turn the crown. Getting it wet without turning it on will not cause anything bad to happen. You can always turn in on after or if you don't turn it on at all the water will evaporate out

What exactly makes this Watch waterproof over the old series besides the water ejection method?

They completely redesigned the speaker so that water doesn't get trapped in there and they added rubber seals and waterproof adhesive mostly.

The digitizer might flip out underwater. So, that's another function of the water mode - it disables the digitizer until you exit water mode.

So you should be pushing the function if you're swimming then. Normal water contact would be fine then use the button.

Even if that were to happen, the water proofing would still be viable and wouldn't defect the Watch for situations when the Series 2 Watch gets submerged. Hence, why the feature is activated after the submersion/getting wet.

Hmm, Im sure I read that you can use this for when in the shower or washing up etc as it prevents the water messing with the touchscreen as it will put it in a lock state to prevent this from happening and then you just turn the crown to unlock the watch and then activate the speaker to expel and water.

When you go for a swim and not doing lengths etc its a good idea to use this feature. When doing lengths etc and using the watch to monitor the swim it will auto engage this lock too if using a swim based activity
