Exactly. Why bother? All Apple is doing is showing rehashed products. Nothing new at all.
Then...even their new tech doesn't work on the little phone. No 3DT for new iphone. I guess they know it's not ready yet.

I thought it was newsworthy since Apple confirmed 3d touch is an unnecessary gimmick by demonstrating live photos with the more effortless long press that doesn't require bulky additional hardware like we've been saying all along. Also, silenced those that say specs don't matter and that you don't need more than 1GB DRAM since it looks like the newest iPad also has 4GB and newest iPhone 6S midget with 2GB. And, it proves Apple has been in the low end segment but is now priced appropriately at $399 but the issue now is considering the guts are the same so where is the value proposition going from low cost LCD 4" to 4.7" for $699 ($300 more) or 5.5" $749 ($350 more)? Those price differentials are for TV jump in size and not fraction of an inch or 1.5". So, will they need to lower the price on the 6S and 6S Plus accordingly like say $399+100 and $399+$150 or introduce a real premium 7 to justify premium pricing?

Or maybe they need to differentiate between the SE and the 6S models as well as save cost for the SE's lower price point? What's the added value in spending $250 more on a 6S if the only differentiating features are screen/battery size?

I think the fact that they added a bunch of new 3DT shortcuts (only Apple app I now see without them is the Watch app, which really has no obvious use for it) mean they are still invested in it. And they're not the only one considering most of my Google apps have integrated 3DT buttons too. ;)

I was actually surprised they priced it that low, considering most everything else internally is the same. And I do have to agree with mi7chy that the price jump to the next model is pretty steep (though to be accurate it's $250, not $300) by comparison now.

Yeah, demonstrating a long press can replace 3DT in a single example proves that. Funny that you don't mention all of the other example where that wouldn't suffice. ;)

Clearly that's not why it's not there, and clearly you know that too.

I think the 5SE looks like a great phone. Best phone at that size IMO, z5 compact is the only reasonable competition
Even the $500 for the 64 gig is a rather shocking price for apple, the phone will age beautifully with that soc + screen res combination. 'in use w/ screen on' battery life claims are higher than the 6s+, which is great too

I don't know that I'm sold on the 9.7" ipp, but I think that is more of a personal problem. When you start talking about tablet + keyboard, I start leaning towards ultrabook. I'd probably end up using it keyboardless like my ipad air (which I love dearly), but then I'm missing a good bit of the entire point of the ipp. I think the midrange ipad / ipad mini are more designed for me. Though maybe if google makes a new nexus 7/8 it will be hard not to head that way instead for my android fix.

I am not sure the price difference would preclude them from adding 3DT. The physical phone model is pretty much the 5s. so they already have the manufacturing process down and evolved to make the phone. Including 3DT would not be $250.
I understand they want people to buy the more expensive models. But also there are some people that truly want a smaller phone. Just like some of us ( me for example) that only want larger phones. So now those people can only have the stripped down smaller phone with out some features they would get on the larger iphones. It is fragmenting the brand.
Then if rumors are true about an iPhone 7s Pro that will have features the iPhone 7 and 7s will not have and a higher price point...doesn't that lead to a brand fragmentation? This is something that Apple has typically avoided in the past. They have traditionally kept the SKU count down.
It will be hard to have a uniform user experience across the brand if you only get certain features for certain iPhones.

Sure pressing for 5 seconds is much better than pressing for .25 seconds.

Maybe apple did not want to: 1) add to the price of the iphone SE and, 2) redesign everything to fit the haptic engine at the expense of battery life. Or maybe they are tacitly admitting it's an unnecessary gimmick. Yeah, that's it.

Apple sold 30 million 5s last year, IIRC. That's a lot of people admitting that 1gb works for them. Let's be honest, more RAM is always better, but has been shown by example after example, even having 4gb ram doesn't solve "the problem". Apple is very good at providing an apple experience with all of it's devices.

I agree the day the iphone 7 is released, the price of the 6s and 6s+ will be dropped, but it won't be to $399 it will be to $550; is there any doubt to that? The price is the price, you either pay it or move on. Apple may be in the low end segment, but this is not a low end phone and I'm sure they will sell a boatload of the new iphone SE.

Well, this model pretty much follows pricing tiers for every product in every industry. It's really not realistic to expect every product produced by a company to have identical functionality across the board. A Honda Civic can't do everything a Honda Accord can do, which can't do everything a Honda minivan can do, which doesn't have all the functionality of a vehicle from their premium brand Acura. Every other electronics manufacturer does the same thing--all of Samsung's products aren't created equal, nor are Microsofts, nor Google's. Why is Apple held to a different standard?

I think it would've been far more fragmenting to omit something like Apple Pay than 3DT. Omitting 3DT doesn't limit the capabilities of the phone as much as limit the choices available to complete a specific task--the task can still be completed. Leaving out Apple Pay would've meant that functionality not being available at all.

And Apple's customer's have been coping with differing product capabilities across their other product lines for years---I think they'll manage. ;)

I can see the reasons behind their decision. I have some friends that want a smaller iPhone. They are still using their 5s because they want a 4 inch phone. Now they won't have 3DT but they didn't have it to begin with so.....

And I'm not trying to apologize for Apple either, just possibly rationalize the decision. Apple does like to trickle out functionality--considering only the 6s models have 3DT--no iPads have it--it's not a huge, glaring omission. I'd wage next year's SE model likely has it.

It's still a pretty decent phone for the price, regardless of whether it has all the features of the 6S. My wife is getting it because it's smaller than her current iPhone 6 and a 2 people I work with are getting it to replace their 5S and 5C. The form factor is appealing to a lot of people and I've seen mostly positive reactions to it so far.

Oh I know....in past Apple was praised for having a unified user experience for the iphone. I see that fragmenting quite a bit now. Different iphones with different feature sets across iphone models. This has always been a complaint against Android OEMs.

I would have got one for my second line if it was 32gb at $399 instead of 16gb.
