I was under the impression I needed to carry my iphone to use apple pay...

Forgot my iphone when going for groceries...

Double clicked the apple pay button and voila "Ready..."

+1 Apple Watch / Apple Pay

I was surprised when I had to manually add all my credit cards onto the Watch even though they were already on the phone but I guess it's so it can work without the phone.

A separate verification process happens for Apple Pay with the Apple Watch.

That's why you can use it without your phone.

Is there some way to view your purchases made in the watch like you can do for the ones on the iPhone?

I have been wondering the same thing...can't seem to find the purchase amounts anywhere so it seems the paper receipt is the only confirmation. I have asked on other threads and a couple people said it was card specific as to whether you see the purchase amount on the watch or the watch app.

I don't see it in the watch app either. The passbook on my phone has it but that's only for purchases made with the phone. Hopefully this is something that will change.

I'm sorry, I think I wasn't clear enough and you misunderstood...I meant to say that other posters have said the card issuer determines if the amount shows up or does not show up with watch purchases. If the issuer lets the purchase amount show up, it will be on either the watch or the watch app on the iPhone. If they don't let it show up, it will be nowhere. I use a Citi card and see nothing. Others have said they use another card and the amounts show up for watch purchases. For my iPhone apple pay purchases though, like you, they show up in passbook on iPhone.

no, that would mean Apple would have to store records of your payment some where... and that's a huge price concerns, especially since Apple is not a financial institute. it does show you your last payment but that's it, you'd have to use your banking app for more info

No, the iPhone Passbook app shows my last 10 purchases if I "flip" the card over. I just want to be able to something similar with the app on the watch, or at least in the watch app on my phone.

It bank specific as the bank provides this information and not apple, so if your bank supports it then you should see it, my card only shows the last transaction - and not any from my AW

True about it being bank specific. Amex will show Apple Pay transactions made with the Watch on iPhone so someone can consider getting an Amex-issued card if having that feature is important to them.

Yes this is because each device has its own "secure element" which stores the card info. You'll notice that when paying for something with iPhone vs. Watch the card number will be different because it is a different device number. This is also why when you reset your phone you need to re-add cards all over again. Nothing is stored in iCloud and cards can't be transferred from iPhone to Watch or vise-versa. It's all in the name of security.
