I’ve noticed for awhile when I’m sleeping the green lights of my watch come on on my bedside table and the battery drains fast than I’d say stand by should. To solve this I usually turn it off.

Today I went the gym and didn’t wear my watch. When I came home and my phone came into proximity it showed the “unlocking Apple Watch pop up”. To my surprise it actually unlocked while on the table. I wanted to test it so I tapped the heart rate (without picking it up) and it even gave a reading of 80bpm… While sitting on the table.

Seems really odd that it couldn’t tell it was on my wrist. I know my old S0 before this S5 never did these weird things.

Every once in awhile I’ve had my watch not detect when it’s not on my wrist. have had it happen with my S3 and S7. One workaround I’ve found if I take it off and the green lights are on is I tap the back with my palm and it seems to turn them off.

Your watch is possessed. Lol, joking aside. That's quite odd. I tried to replicate it on my S4, and no dice. I believe the unlocking on the AW happens due to linked iPhone, but the heart rate, you got me there.

Nothing strange about that. The watch isn’t clever enough to know for an absolute certainty that it’s on your wrist - it takes best guess based upon the sensors - and the sensors can be fooled.

I just took my watch off, fired up the heart rate app then let it sit there for a minute or so resting on the strap - got 96 BPM.

That is true, in the end the sensor just passes information it received in feedback to the algorithm.

Is wrist detection turned off by any chance ?

On my S4 watch, the instant I remove my watch from my wrist, it locks, so it knows right away that its no longer on my wrist.
