I have an iPad 1 running ios 5.11 and, if possible, would like to upload movies to it for my grandkids to watch.

How can I do this?

Midwest!
You could get a USB to lighting stick storage and transfer it with an app like file browser or files itself I believe. Or you could put it in iCloud and download that way.

I don't think it even has iCloud Drive. I think we're talking about the OG iPad with 30-pin connector here. Apart from direct download through iTunes app (on iPad), I think USB transfer using iTunes on Windows and whatever replaced iTunes on Mac are the only options.

Yeah, no lightning port, but there was a 30-pin camera adapter that had an SD reader and USB-A port...

That’s only useful for transferring stuff to/from camera roll. External drive support was only added in iOS 13.
