Which straps will suit the 42mm silver apple sport. The apple rep in store said to me only the leather loop will suit. Was anyone else told this?

The rep meant in terms of aesthetics. You could put on a classic buckle, Milanese loop, or link if you want, but the connectors are stainless steel, so it doesn't match the case. The leather loop is all leather so there is no mismatch in metals.

The best straps for the silver sport would be the sport bands, leather loop and Milanese.
