Watch Youtube and surf web without Flash installed at All

What will be the best way to watch youtube videos and surf all other web content without having to install Flash ? I am hoping that there must be a technique to get around this problem.

I had initially used Click2Flash but didn't want Flash on my Macbook at all (preferably) because it prolongs my battery life.

I am not sure how the others manage surfing the web without Flash on their machines at all (I assume there maybe a few). I would like to know if you have any recommendations ? I found out some videos on Youtube plays well on HTML5 but there are many more that doesn't play without Flash (at least on my Mac). I don't know why that happens.

Install Chrome.

Safari support h.264 out of the box, so you'll be surprised how many videos are starting to work without flash. When you hit a site that needs flash, switch to chrome real quick. It has flash built it.

Yes. I used Chrome before Safari 6 got released. Guess, I'll have to switch to Chrome in case there's flash content. It will be real nice if there's a fix without having to leave Safari. But maybe I'm expecting too much.

You got it right. Always leave it opted out. Once in a while check that youtube.com/html5 page as sometimes it automatically joins you as it doesn't detect flash on your system.

With no flash and clicktoplugin installed, some videos don't play. But with clicktoplugin and youtube5 both installed, every video plays. youtube5 works great on some sites for videos I visit which would otherwise require flash.

There are still videos that don't play

I have came across a video on a site that doesn't play and I have both ClickToPlugin and Youtube5 extensions installed. It seems to want Flash version 9 installed.

Pleas have a look at the below browser image. I'm not sure if I have to tweak some settings on ClickToPlugin (which I don't know).

And a list of other sites that didn't work (Flash-rich websites) :

I've clickToPlugin and Youtube5 extensions installed, but, every time I visit this site: http://globoesporte.globo.com , my Safari 6 (running Mountain Lion) shows me the rainbow spinning wheel.
Could you guys please try that website? It freezes my Safari for a few seconds.

I have both the extensions you mentioned and no Flash. I tried the site and it loaded well and complete. But I feel the site is high-quality/data-rich site as I had trouble scrolling smoothly.
Mac's that are bogged down or not clean installed sometimes may not load sites like these well. Try clean-installing. Mine was; with Mountain Lion.

But still the site, should be optimized/coded better.

The site loads well and complete here, but while it's loading I can't scroll and sometimes I see the rainbow spinning wheel.
I may try a clean install, but I'd Lion for 3 weeks (bought a mac 3 weeks before the ML release) with almost nothing installed, thought a clean install was not necessary.

ClickToPlugin replaces Flash videos with HTML5.

These are Flash websites, which require you to have Flash installed. If you have Flash and ClickToPlugin installed, Flash will not load by default, and you have to click for it to load the page. (hence the name ClickToPlugin)

This at least stops Flash ads loading, and means you have control over where Flash is loaded.

I only run ClickToPlugin—I have yet to see a site where that does not work, and YouTube5 does. (if anyone has examples, please post them)

The site generally seems slow here (with or without ClickToPlugin) but it doesn’t freeze Safari.

What I have found though, is that you should set ClickToPlugin to:
“Do not preload” and disable “Instant autoplay”

On sites such as Tested.com where there are multiple videos on the front page, if you have these enabled it will try and load all the videos at once, which will bring any system to its knees for a while.

I can't watch Youtube videos without Flash using ClickToPlugin, I always see an error message saying that I need to have flash, that's why I use Youtube5. Do you know a fix for it?

Also, thanks for your tip. I set my option to "Do not preload".

Hi and Thanks for the pointers you posted earlier. They were helpful.

It solved my issue. I thought I could get away without installing Flash at all, but as the
situation showed, I still NEED FLASH to load Flash websites.

I’ve never run into that problem. I use the regular YouTube page not the opt-in HTML5 beta though. Check to see if you have that enabled on your Mac/Account.

You may want to remove both plugins and try reinstalling ClickToPlugin.

Wow, thanks for being so cool! I will take a look at my settings, but, I don't have Flash plugin installed, does it matter? I must have Flash to watch Youtube videos using ClickToPlugin (even though it would play in html5 instead of the default flash).

ps: I'm not in HTML5 Beta from Youtube.
