Watching DVDs

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I was always convinced that the Apple TV would play DVDs from your computer and stream it to the Apple TV to watch on your TV, yet reading all of the information on the Apple website, it seems you can only access films from iTunes to play on it. Is this the case?
