Watching/Listening to iPod media through Apple TV

I'm thinking of purchasing an Apple TV but have one question before I do. I currently own an iPod video, I think 5th generation. Anyway, is there a way that I can connect my iPod into the Apple TV and listen to the music and watch the video from the iPod? Maybe control the iPod using the Apple TV? Does that make sense? I actually have more content on my iPod than in iTunes seeing that I had an OS crash; using Windows. I really don't want to have to go back through the ordeal of loading all of my media again when it's right there on my iPod. I'm not interested in transferring the media from the iPod to the Apple TV, but that sure would be a bonus. I will be using the HDMI connection from the Apple TV to my stereo receiver and will NOT be using component connections. I don't even have an S-Video connection on the receiver. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance. :)
 
Think of the Apple TV as an iPod for your television. Media has to be in your iTunes library on your computer. From there, you can sync it (or, in the case of the Apple TV, you can also stream content over your home network) to your devices. If it's not in your iTunes library, it won't be on your Apple TV (with a few exceptions, namely stuff from the iTMS you can access right from your ATV). So no, there is no way to just plug in your iPod and have it show up in your Apple TV. If you want it there, you'll have to transfer your iPod content to your iTunes library.
 
I'm not sure how to transfer my iPod content to iTunes, but I will do some research. I'm still kind of new to the whole Apple experience.

When connecting the Apple TV to a network using the RJ-45 connection, does the Apple TV have the ability to have a static IP address, such as other components/computers on the network? or does it use some other method?

You can use manual setup for setting the ipaddress.

In my case I have gone to having my router assign ipaddress's based on MAC Address when I need to have a static IP.
 
Yeah you really need to get your content back into iTunes, if for no other reason you're screwed if anything happens to your iPod. I remember doing this for my sister-in-law who had a Windows machine and it seemed to be kind of a pain...I know there's software out there to do that though. On a Mac you can use the free software Senuti (iTunes spelled backwards...pretty clever?) to do this and it's pretty straightforward...but that doesn't really help you does it? :D

Spice Weasel is correct: the ATV is basically like another iPod. iTunes is meant to be more or less like the "master" control and the devices, like your iPod, Apple TV, iPhone, etc. are like the "slaves" that sync to it. There are some exceptions but that's basically how it's designed to work.
