Watching non-iTunes bought video on Apple TV

Can you watch non iTunes bought video on Apple TV? I have some tutorials on computer programs that are in my iTunes library but they weren't bought via iTunes (they aren't even available on iTunes).

Also, since the new Apple TV will be streaming wirelessly (or wired - our choice) there is no possible way for me to turn off my Macbook Pro when using it, is there?

Yes, but they need to be encoded to run in iTunes. I use the program Handbrake to encode my videos with the AppleTV preset. The program works great but on my 2.4 C2D it takes about 5 hours per video. Once you're done encoding you can use MetaX to add metadata to your movies to be viewed in iTunes.

The video plays in iTunes but since I haven't bought Apple TV yet I don't know if it works with ATV. It's a Mpeg-4 video.
 
I think if it plays in iTunes, you should be able to get it to play on AppleTV, you just might need to re encode it.

Assuming it not DRM protected, you can select it in iTunes, then go to the "Advanced" drop down menu and click "Create iPad or AppleTV verison"
 
Found it on Apple's website:
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

well, that pretty much turns me off to apple tv, i don't know if i can convert all these videos.:eek:

Yeah, I told you it would take a while. That is the only major downside of this process. I just start encoding at night and build the queue up so next day around 3-4 it is completed.
 
For the new Apple TV, you could just use Air Video or Plex from the app store and stream unsupported files to your iOS device and then Airplay them to your Apple TV.
 
I have my ext HD connected to my AEBS, so I access the drive over network.

Anyone know if new Apple TV will be able to stream movies from networked drives? Be great if I didnt have to leave my laptop on to stream movies.

No, you will need your computer and iTunes running to stream to the Apple TV.

Do you think that this is something that could be achieved with a future jailbreak?

At the moment, I watch movies by streaming them from my laptop to PS3. Will be good to miss out the laptop all together and just have a device accessing network drive directly.

Yes, I've got a hacked Apple TV and can play my files stored on the hard drive attached to my AirPort Extreme using XBMC, Boxee or nitoTV.

The current hacks obviously won't work on the new Apple TV.

I'm assuming it will be a matter of time before similar hacks are made available for new one then. I know you can hack current one to play divx/mkv, but accessing ext HD is excellent.

Think I'll be making a purchase soon enough :)

I've been watching reviews of the new ATV and it looks like people aren't having to convert their personal media - otherwise they'd have at least have a blurb about it. Of course, this is assuming it's not avi or divx
