So yeah my week old iPhone 8 has water in the Camera lens. Photos are all cloudy. Guess I’m going to the Apple Store in the morning.

I am now worried about the water resistance of these phones. I was taking photos of my kid playing in the tub and it was submerged like 3 inches. Pretty sure that’s well within the IPX limitations.

Gonna be pissed if Apple tries to charge me my AppleCare+ deductable.

Any other stories of iPhone 7/8 getting water in them so easily??

It's basically water resistant rather than water proof. As I recall liquid damage isn't covered by normal warranty, but likely falls under accidental replacement when it comes to AppleCare+.

I’m not using my AppleCare incident for a week old phone. I’ll give them hell if they try to pull that. I’ve given them literally thousands of Dollars so they better take care of me.

The thing is that, at least as I recall, liquid damage is only covered as part of the accidental replacement. If you had dropped the phone and something got damaged, it wouldn't matter if it was a week old phone or how much money you've spent with Apple, it would still be something that wouldn't be covered normally and would fall under accidental replacement.

Why have a water resistant phone If you won’t even stand by it? I’ve seen YouTube videos where they subject the phones to FAR WORSE water situations than mine being in a tub for a few seconds, and they come out fine. Yet mine couldn’t handle being in a tub? Geez. Can’t wait to lose $99 tomorrow that I can’t afford.

Well, there are videos where phones drop and not much happens to them. And then there are those when they break. Ultimately it's based on what they include and don't include in their coverage. They see the device as water resistant, but that doesn't mean water proof, and that's basically the difference for them. Hopefully you might get lucky and/or things have changed and they are a bit more lenient with that kind of thing.

You also have to remember, water resistance is merely just an added layer of protection. It's not a guarantee of anything. I would not rely on YouTube videos based on how water resistant an iPhone is, those are risks that somebody takes not knowing the outcome.

Thought I would report back. Apple was really good to me I am happy to report. They waived the $99 replacement fee but did use up one of my AppleCare+ Incidents. Hate that I am down to one so soon but really can’t complain.

He showed me the page that talks about the iPhone 7/8 being WATER RESISTANT under “very controlled conditions” and that any variable can change it. Any kind of water pressure or shooting water can get inside the speaker grill which is really just a mesh.

It sure makes me question the water resistance at all. It definitely should not of failed the way it did in my opinion. I was well within the limit of the IP67 rating.

To me water resistance in phones is like putting a bulletproof vest and ask someone to shoot you or you shoot yourself to see if it works. Anyway, I hope Apple replaces your phone without charging you.

The phone isn’t water proof so you can’t be mad...

If it was water proof and it happened then you would be correct

Did it trip the water damage stickers?

So this happened to me as well and I found a 90% solution. My new iphone 8 at the lake in my pocket, I ended up in the water and so it goes. Strangely all seemed ok for about 1.5 days, took some video and photos, but then the evening of the second day my pictures became cloudy and I could see condensation on the rear camera lens cover. When I returned from the trip, I tried taking the camera module out (simpler than in older models) and was able to dry the lens cover from inside with alcohol and lens cleaning wipes. However, I could now see that the lens itself had water inside. I used a hot air station set at 100 C and gently heated the module. Things looked much better but as it cooled, the condensation returned. In a last ditch effort, I dropped the module in a small container of alcohol and let it saturate, agitating it regularly. Next I removed and dried with at 100 C and all condensation disappeared and did not return. Under the scope I could see I had possibly scratched the lens with some micro brushes - very faint lines. The lens is epoxied onto the module so removal would be tricky (the whole sensor and lens is floating in vibration reduction assembly). I reinstalled and it's working OK. It may be in my head but the pictures appear a little less sharp. However, it is very usable as a camera again so I'll probably wait for camera module prices to come down and then replace. I'd call it 90% fixed.
