I noticed yesterday when direct sunlight hit my phone’s screen (it was off) that there was this strange rippled look on the display itself (under the glass). Upon further inspection, I noticed this in several random places on the screen. It is really only noticeable when the screen is OFF and in bright light/sunlight, but I want to know if this is normal. My Series 5 Watch also seems to have it to a degree, so is this just a characteristic of Apple’s OLED displays? It doesn’t appear to affect the actual image when the screen is ON at all. I’m incredibly OCD and I know this is silly, but I’m just looking for some confirmation one way or the other. Thanks all!

The OLED panel underneath the glass is flexible and soft. It can deform easily from pressure. It will cause no harm in functionality, but it is covered under the Apple warranty.

This issue is exclusive to OLED displays. For example at work we refurbish OLED Samsung displays like S8. After cutting the glass away, the OLED panel can't be laminated to a new glass again with 100% precision due to the soft and flexible structure of the panel itself. Therefore, these little wavy bumps will appear randomly on the display, but only visible when it is off.

So in short, it’s normal?

If it doesn't bother you it won't cause further damage and the phone will function fine. Think about it like a scratch.

But again, Apple covers this under the warranty if you decide to return it because it bothers you. I know a guy who gripped his 11 Pro too hard and the bumps appeared.
