Way Off-topic, but there is a photo...

I'm gonna ask for opinions of you lovely people here in regards to naming my assistance dog. She's a three week old French Mastiff, as I need a big dog that can apply lots of pressure to me, so as to bring me back into myself easily and safely when I freak out and dissociate in public. I get to bring her home in another three weeks or so.

Anyway, the three names I have narrowed my decision down to are (in alphabetical order and with their meanings):

• Fenna - Guardian of peace.
• Kendra - Greatest champion.
• Selma - Divine protector.

Thank you all for your input. In regards to names, I just woke with this realisation:

The more I think about it, the more I'm torn between Fenna and Kendra. I love the idea of having a champion (advocate, defender, supporter, someone that's got my back, etc...) on my side, looking after me in all manner of ways, but when I think long and hard about what I really need her for, Fenna is perfect as it's really my peace of mind that she is there to guard! Whilst initially, I liked Selma, I'm not remotely religious, I'm deeply Spiritual, but not religious and feel the word divine (god like, or magical) is not really appropriate for me.

She is gorgeous. Can't wait to see more of her on here!

She is a cutie! I got down on the floor with the eight pups and she came bounding over, instantly chewing on my chin and ear! I reckon she chose me! After much playtime with her, I snuggled her for the photo above and she promptly fell asleep in my arms.

I never had kids of my own, and feel like she's going to be that surrogate for the baby I never got to experience.

I am sure there will be plenty of sickeningly cute photo's shared here with you all of her progress through life, training, socialisation, etc... I don't get to do the specialised assistance dog training with her until she is one and a half years old, but in the meantime there's all the obedience training to a high level and socialisation to undertake, interspersed with plenty of time to be a puppy. Good times ahead!

I saw a guy in Schiphol airport on Friday, he had a pug. The pug was wearing a "Support Dog" harness. Was so cute.

When I started researching breeds as potential assistant animals or service dogs as the Americans call them for my particular mental health challenges / experiences, it turns out that Mastiffs fit the bill perfectly! Also Alsatians / German Shepherds and the larger Labradors, but they don't really cut the mustard for me.

I love that you can use the right breed for you in regards to assistant animals. As long as they have gone through the training and testing processes in a timely fashion. Turns out that in the US there's a huge loophole in this regards, where people are able to get an "in training" jacket, with no expiration date, so you now have the average Joe getting one and sticking it on their dog, with no intention of actually getting it tested, as they just want to take their dog everywhere with them!

Yeah my mate got Newfoundlands because of their nature and the fact they cant be walked too much as it is too much for them. Find a big lake mind you and then you better have a good book because they love to swim....... For hours! He has three at one point. At the same time, in a big but not huge house... When they pawed you for attention, it was like a left hook from a boxer.

As for the loophole, i have to be careful here as my brother in law got a support dog setup for his labradoodle when moving from NY to LA. He bought her business class seats and everything so she could fly with him rather than in a basket in the hold or have to drive cross country with her. So on the one hand, i am upset that he abused a rule but on the other hand Inwas impressed he went to such cost and effort to make sure his baby was safe.

She is amazing but she does this thing where she sneaks in next to you when you sleep, and sits up at your shoulder staring at you from a couple inches away. She is begging to play but as she has been trained to be quiet, she just sits for AGES staring at you with the begging eyes... She is wonderful. I am so happy to see Fenna (we agreed yeah?) And I am so looking forward to seeing if she keeps her muzzle colours. So that is your obligation to us now... We want to see puppy pictures and action shots. Already she has fans around the world, like your camera group have. So mucho pictures my friend....

Re the question asked, my choice would be Kendra. (Dumbledore's mother was also named thus by J K Rowling, but that is another story).

That would freak me out, waking to her only inches away staring at you. I used to have an ex that did that, I'd wake in the middle of the night and she would be staring at me from maybe a foot away. Use to really freak me out, cause I'd wake up thinking someone was there, and there was. It was a bit spooky really!

Thank you @Scepticalscribe ! I have ended up going with Fenna, as I see myself as my own champion, especially with all the advocacy work I do, and my recently becoming a peer ambassador for a national mental health organisation here in Oz.
