hey guys I didn't notice more people had replied to my thread, what's with the user cp feature at macrumors, it works sometimes and sometims it doesn't, I must have missed tons of replies, because despite my subscribe to the thread you post in choice and have it show up thus in user cp when said thread gets a new post I seldomly have this happen...what's that about? Anyway...
Hey PNutts, that's just great!!! Thanks for the heads up, unfortunately i tried to restore the phone from a partial 2 gb back up I d gotten (before at about 75% the mobile sync app crashed once more on me) which somehow didn't manage to get any of the data back on it...nor the apps, in all its 2 gbs...so I guess most of the data has been wiped off, that said your suggestion looks like such a great find I will definately look it up, thanks again.
hey small white car, thanks for sympathizing, I appreciate it, a lot. You should see the snearing remarks I got at apple's forums (and the eventual deletion of my thread by those bunch of no good cencors...tststtst) where the first response was by a 8,000 poster guy who just went: "don't blame apple for a vista flow", of course they deleted the whole thing then...
Hey Aries thanks for sharing that bro. Exactly that's what pisses me off too, that I thought "they'd make this next to impossible to happen" on such an advanced smart phone (for which btw I paid with contract around $650 in europe to get...). I mean we are talking here about very important and sensitive data. What happened in my case now that I ve mourned my losses is that simply itunes got messed up between the already tranfered apps and they ones on the phone, tried to recopy the apps on the apps folder on the computer (all of them were already there btw) failed to copy some and then synced the remaining ones, i.e. obliterating all the data in the rest.
And what pisses me more is that I d intentionally held of jailbreaking the damn thing (and I got a lot of buddies who were nagging me about the great apps I could get on jailbreaking it) because I didn't want to make the platform unstable...how ironic...
To me the worst idea of all is syncing the apps, that's just begging for disasters, because if somehow via human error you desect an app of via a bug as in my case, then all the data goes along with it, because itunes transfers the purchase and not the data of the app. Come to think of it, where is the data for the app stored? It should be in the backup right? Why isn't it stored in the app itself as this is tranfered in the apps folder on the computer? Cause that is the roote of all evil if you ask me, corrrect me if I am wrong but whats the point in tranfering the app to the computer from the phone, since you can get it anytime again via itunes, when you don't actually transfer any of the USER DATA of the app itself, that's a catastrophe waiting to happen, cause if you unsync an app and resync it again none of the data gets tranfered back right? So if you unsync an app and the backup is flawed in some way you pretty much done for... So either copy the data WITH the app when you sync apple, or change the senile sync paradigm with the apps and just tranfer them instead, what's the point in syncing too things if they don't actually contain the same data? How are the apps "synced" exactly if the computer merely has just the app installer and the phone has the app AND the data, every sync paradigm I have used (folders for example which I use all the time between computers) involves amongst other options first and foremost that the synced items are IDENTICAL, and not that one contains the data while the other does not, and then there's a separate entity called a backup for the data, how's that syncing, in what sense?? Here if you unsychronize an app and the phone and then resynch it you get to lose all your data right? That's unheard of. Is it just me, because this kind of fuzzy logic doesn't make any sense on their part, they tried to combine the song sync paradigm with the apps and messed it all up.
Anyways, at the moment guys and gals I am looking for a good backup analyzer to get to see what's inside that 2 gb backup but all I can find is a python script that I need to get ubuntu to run on and...I can't be arsed to tell you the truth...I ll keep looking for something to make sense of an iphone backup.... Which btw included in this bloatware that is itunes right now, shouldn't there have been some app to look inside your backup and extract data sans iphone? Aren't backups supposed to give the chance to browse inside them and extract data WITHOUT the original device you backed up from? Apple is again screwing up the backup paradigm here too. Even if they dissalow that what guarantees me as a business user who wants above all some assurances of data integrity that the backup was performed correctly. Shouldn't there be AT LEAST some backup verification feature. After the nuclear meltdown of my phone I can't just trust that apple won't mess everything up again, how then do I know that the backup is ok if they don't provide a verification utility? Dvd burners provide data verify, zip files verify the data they zip, backup archivers of all sorts verify that the data backed up is ok, why isn't apple doing this?
Anyways sorry for my lenghty post, thanks to everyone who constructively chimed in, I am an old time of sorts with 16 computer experience on my back and I ve learned the hard way that time and again programs will rob a very important very vital part of your work or leisure by means of crashing and losing the data, hence my current perenial raid setups, hence the remote backup I take of them... wish there had been something to do beforehand with the iphone, well now I know, and I am jailbreaking the damn thing to get the helpful apps in from the community not the closed minded screw ups who've designed parts of this device (because of course there are very clever people too involved within apple for the iphone no denying that....)...
