Most of my important apps, all of my audio recordings from speakeasy voice recorder as well as the app (which I ve been trying in vain to get the recordins on my computer for a few months now....), everything at shazam and midomi, including the apps....and tons more...all my notes on the notepad app gone too. every important app is gone, and let alone the data, it seems I have to rebuy them for some reason....this is all happening to a an iphone that is in perfect shape, non jailbroken....

It had been impossible to take a backup in vista since I got hte phone, so I guarded it like a hawk in case something went wrong.

Today i tried with a clean vista intall for a a new backup...it crashed (mobile sync has stopped working) a few times, then upon another sync it said cannot read data from device, then in the final backup I got the above brillian the results....

Thanks apple...months of notes and audio notes data gone down the drain FOR NOT F.CKING ALLOWING THE USER TO JUST OPEN UP THE IPHONE AS PROPER FOLDERS AND INSTEAD HAVING TO GO THROUGH THE ITUNES BACKUP....

As you might imagine I am jailbreaking this thing asap and trying to find some undelete software I am competely and utterly :eek::eek::eek::eek: at the moment...

sorry to hear.Regarding the apps, you dont have to rebuy them since they are already from your account in itunes that detects that you previously owned them.so u will be able to redownload them.
regarding everything else, not sure.Maybe you could check to see if a last backup was done n is sitting somewhere on your pc and work with that somehow.Maybe someone here would assist u more.

hey buddy, thanks a lot for your reply, I am sitting here in utter despair about that tremendous loss of data, we are talking here about months of voice notes at meetings and written notes...at least I hope I wont have to pay for my apps again because so far itunes doesn't reload them...but that's the least I am worried about, I am just going to jailbreak the damn thing and if anyone can suggest some recovery software for files....

Sir, that really is your own problem. You can rebuy the apps you bought for no extra $. But this is pretty much your fault for not backing up your files, not Apple's. If you had backed it up, your apps would have stayed there during sync. In fact, if you were careful, your apps could even have been copied back to your computer had you selected that.

LESSON OF LIFE : BACK UP - it's really THAT important, back up three times a week, or if you're cautious like me, backup every day (minus sunday), save every back-up. Not just the newest one! :)

I TRIED TO BACKUP UP UPWARDS OF 30 TIMES EVERY FOUR DAYS OR SO FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS AND EVERYTIME I GOT CRASHES OF THE MOBILE SYNC APP IN ITUNES AND VISTA, I EVEN INSTALLED VISTA THREE TIMES JUST TO GET IT TO WORK, IT DELETED MY VALUABLE DATA WHILE I WAS ATTEMPTING YET ANOTHER BACKUP, I DIDN'T JAILBREAK IT, JUST WENT BY THE BOOK.

Whoa the Caps!. Considering there's barely anyone with this problem - it's probably your end, not Apple's. Active Sync shouldn't have these problems. And I'm not even going to say it's Vista's Fault. Stop the Caps, think carefully (And explain it better) what exactly happen. If you installed 3 times, and didn't back-up your iTunes folder, and put it back... That could be why data was lost.

Ignored. ^.

What is very, very perplexing is that while backing up I was asked to sync and itunes proceeded in telling me after transfering some of my apps on the computer, it proceed it to tell me it could not read from the disk (i.e. the iphone) and then randombly deleted some of the apps....that's apple's idea of a backup?????:eek::eek:

Can someone suggest a recovery utility?, Surely all the things that were deleted from the iphone they can't have been low level formatted, they must be some portion of them still there for me to recover in some way...

Ignore if you like, but it's the fact. Backup is the only thing that could / could have saved you. When an audio app (Say... Recorder) saves an audio file, it isn't saved elsewhere in the phone. But rather, it is saved inside the application (Like a Mac's Package Contents). So when you delete it, they're gone for good, since you've deleted the app, when the data is inside the app. In addition, when you delete the app (normally) on the iPhone, and reinstall it later, everything will be gone, because all informations with it are deleted.

This isn't a matter of Jailbreaking or not, what you've done was had their data deleted.

It's arguable that unless you jailbreak it open, you can't backup those data, but they shouldn't happen. If you had the logs of what happened, it'd be much easier to find out exactly what happened...

Another reason the recorder app is better, much more reliable Wifi Synchronization, higher quality audio recording, simpler interface.

Jesus man how many time do I have to say that my files got deleted WHILE attempting a backup? (And that the backup process crashed in all my previous attempts for a complete backup). You are adding insult to injury...

It gets even more perplexing:
While backing up I as asked do you want you apps tranfered and synced if they are not transfered then you will lose your data, and so I procceeded to say, ok transfer and sync them then. I now open the Mobile Applications folder in my itunes library and I see almost all the apps there have two or three multiple copies, eg. Runkeeper, Runkeeper 1, etc....What's going on here??? What the heck happened????

But more importantly is there some software that I can use to see the flash drive of the iphone as is and recover some of my files?

I have even found an old 2 gb backup that is most certainly incomplete (and I don't dare use anything by apple at the moment to restore it) but must contain some portion of my data, how can I access it?

Assuming the data is still there, O'Reilly has a book on iPhone forensics that describes in great detail the methods law enforcement uses to recover data (evidence) from an iPhone. The author also has a video on the process shown at a conference (sorry, don't have the link). It is interesting how insecure the phone is. Good luck!

First of all, I understand you're frustrated, I would be extremely pissed in your opinion. But if people took out the time of day to actually come and suggest help for your problem, there is no need for you to whip out the caps and funky colors.

Take a deep breath, now that its over, theres nothing you can do about it, you can only prevent it from happening again.

Maybe its a problem with your iPhone, take it into Apple and ask about it.
Remember to be courteous and polite, thats when they're most likely to help you.

Is there anyway to restore the iPhone from an older backup or does iTunes automatically deletes older backups of the iPhone every time it does another back up? Apple, if you're reading this thread, you need to do a TimeMachine type backup feature for the iPhone through iTunes so you can restore a backup from another time.

Buddy, you're not the only one this has happened to. It's happened to my boss. He updated to software 2.2 and for some reason, he lost all his data. I don't know the details but you'd think Apple would make something like this next to impossible from happening.

hey guys I didn't notice more people had replied to my thread, what's with the user cp feature at macrumors, it works sometimes and sometims it doesn't, I must have missed tons of replies, because despite my subscribe to the thread you post in choice and have it show up thus in user cp when said thread gets a new post I seldomly have this happen...what's that about? Anyway...

Hey PNutts, that's just great!!! Thanks for the heads up, unfortunately i tried to restore the phone from a partial 2 gb back up I d gotten (before at about 75% the mobile sync app crashed once more on me) which somehow didn't manage to get any of the data back on it...nor the apps, in all its 2 gbs...so I guess most of the data has been wiped off, that said your suggestion looks like such a great find I will definately look it up, thanks again.

hey small white car, thanks for sympathizing, I appreciate it, a lot. You should see the snearing remarks I got at apple's forums (and the eventual deletion of my thread by those bunch of no good cencors...tststtst) where the first response was by a 8,000 poster guy who just went: "don't blame apple for a vista flow", of course they deleted the whole thing then...

Hey Aries thanks for sharing that bro. Exactly that's what pisses me off too, that I thought "they'd make this next to impossible to happen" on such an advanced smart phone (for which btw I paid with contract around $650 in europe to get...). I mean we are talking here about very important and sensitive data. What happened in my case now that I ve mourned my losses is that simply itunes got messed up between the already tranfered apps and they ones on the phone, tried to recopy the apps on the apps folder on the computer (all of them were already there btw) failed to copy some and then synced the remaining ones, i.e. obliterating all the data in the rest.

And what pisses me more is that I d intentionally held of jailbreaking the damn thing (and I got a lot of buddies who were nagging me about the great apps I could get on jailbreaking it) because I didn't want to make the platform unstable...how ironic...

To me the worst idea of all is syncing the apps, that's just begging for disasters, because if somehow via human error you desect an app of via a bug as in my case, then all the data goes along with it, because itunes transfers the purchase and not the data of the app. Come to think of it, where is the data for the app stored? It should be in the backup right? Why isn't it stored in the app itself as this is tranfered in the apps folder on the computer? Cause that is the roote of all evil if you ask me, corrrect me if I am wrong but whats the point in tranfering the app to the computer from the phone, since you can get it anytime again via itunes, when you don't actually transfer any of the USER DATA of the app itself, that's a catastrophe waiting to happen, cause if you unsync an app and resync it again none of the data gets tranfered back right? So if you unsync an app and the backup is flawed in some way you pretty much done for... So either copy the data WITH the app when you sync apple, or change the senile sync paradigm with the apps and just tranfer them instead, what's the point in syncing too things if they don't actually contain the same data? How are the apps "synced" exactly if the computer merely has just the app installer and the phone has the app AND the data, every sync paradigm I have used (folders for example which I use all the time between computers) involves amongst other options first and foremost that the synced items are IDENTICAL, and not that one contains the data while the other does not, and then there's a separate entity called a backup for the data, how's that syncing, in what sense?? Here if you unsychronize an app and the phone and then resynch it you get to lose all your data right? That's unheard of. Is it just me, because this kind of fuzzy logic doesn't make any sense on their part, they tried to combine the song sync paradigm with the apps and messed it all up.

Anyways, at the moment guys and gals I am looking for a good backup analyzer to get to see what's inside that 2 gb backup but all I can find is a python script that I need to get ubuntu to run on and...I can't be arsed to tell you the truth...I ll keep looking for something to make sense of an iphone backup.... Which btw included in this bloatware that is itunes right now, shouldn't there have been some app to look inside your backup and extract data sans iphone? Aren't backups supposed to give the chance to browse inside them and extract data WITHOUT the original device you backed up from? Apple is again screwing up the backup paradigm here too. Even if they dissalow that what guarantees me as a business user who wants above all some assurances of data integrity that the backup was performed correctly. Shouldn't there be AT LEAST some backup verification feature. After the nuclear meltdown of my phone I can't just trust that apple won't mess everything up again, how then do I know that the backup is ok if they don't provide a verification utility? Dvd burners provide data verify, zip files verify the data they zip, backup archivers of all sorts verify that the data backed up is ok, why isn't apple doing this?
Anyways sorry for my lenghty post, thanks to everyone who constructively chimed in, I am an old time of sorts with 16 computer experience on my back and I ve learned the hard way that time and again programs will rob a very important very vital part of your work or leisure by means of crashing and losing the data, hence my current perenial raid setups, hence the remote backup I take of them... wish there had been something to do beforehand with the iphone, well now I know, and I am jailbreaking the damn thing to get the helpful apps in from the community not the closed minded screw ups who've designed parts of this device (because of course there are very clever people too involved within apple for the iphone no denying that....)...

I did a quick search and found this

http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=45619
- It says iPod, it might work

Else i found this, but it require a jailbroken phone

http://modmyi.com/forums/file-mods/237321-how-iphone-data-recovery.html

I will jailbreak it for sure, thanks a lot bro for the heads up, will definately give them a go!:)

Now what have we got here, little siugrad99 had his say, so siugrad you graduated from siu in 99 huh, with what a Btwunt maybe? Or EVEN a Ph.kingtwunt?

how is your lack of knowledge apple's fault?

stop trying to place blame and just admit when you screw up...

My iphone wont back up either!!
