Way to save web pages/clippings on iPhone?

Last week I tried using my iPhone as my only device while on holiday. No laptop. It came close to doing everything I needed to do. I found one big hole, though: I often like to save content from web pages for later "off-line" reference, and to combine into text documents.

Is there an way (or a separate app) that I can use to save content from web pages into text files on the iPhone?

I guess the lack of cut and paste means there's no way I can create documents of selected text from other files.

Anyway, these capabilities would go a long way toward helping me use the iPhone in place of a little laptop when I travel.

I do that sometimes. The usability improvement would be huge for me if I could highlight stuff on a web page and save it to a text or rtf file -- and then create new files by cutting and pasting content from existing files.

This is where an app like Documents to Go would really shine on the iPhone. (Except that it can't capture the initial on-line content.) At least it would help the iPhone to function more like the way many of us use a personal computing device.

Instapaper

You can add a bookmark to your computer and to Safari on the iphone. When you are on a page you want to save you click the bookmark and it gets saved to Instapaper.

On the iPhone you can then view the saved webpage as a converted text file, and if you select it in the settings you can also have the whole webpage downloaded to your iPhone too.

Have a look at Instapaper on the App Store, it has a free trial version too.

Have you tried iwebsaver.com ? Just go to it from your iPhone and type in the URL of the page you want to archive for offline. Just follow the easy instructions. In the end, you bookmark the page it loads for you so you can recall it later offline. It only archives the first layer of the page tho. Any deeper you need to go in to save it.

Have you tried NuageTV (free) from the appstore? Is free RSS reader that allows offline browsing of RSS feeds.

Also, Byline in the appstore ($4.99) does offline RSS feeds and also claims they do offline browsing via your Google Reader.

What I'm looking for, though, is an app for use on-the-go -- without reliance on another computer. Afterall, the iPhone is a pretty powerful computer itself, and has three different means of sending/receiving data built in (cellular, wifi, bluetooth). It boggles my small brain that its OS is engineered to require the use of another computer for saving and editing even basic text files.

It seems like Apple still sees their little jewel as just a cell phone with extended capabilities. I envision (fantacize?) a small verstatile personal computer that has telephone capability built in (based on comparison with the Touch.)

It can be entirely used on the iPhone. It installs a bookmark into Safari on the iPhone and when you click it it saves the website you're currently viewing into the Instapaper app on the iPhone.
