Way to turn on Screen Sharing through Terminal

Hey everyone, I have been mulling over a problem with a server at work that I have been trying to fix and have yet to come to an answer. We have a server in the back that use to operate a point of sale (POS) system but about 2 years ago we switched to a new POS that ran off of an iMac at the front of the store. The server became useless for about a year and a half until we got another license of the new POS and put it on the server for outside of the store access. I use to be able to access this server through finder and screen share using one of the users on the system. Not much to it pretty simple.

This system was running I believe 10.6 (mountain lion) before I updated it to maverick. I did this mainly because our POS needs to be updated after the heart bleed and other issues of late and during one of the last releases they made 10.7 the minimum requirement. The update went fine and the system is working but I can no longer use screen sharing to access the server. I can connect to it and see its files but can not get screen share to work. It just gives me a message that says I need to turn on screen sharing.

I have been looking for different ways to turn in on and have yet to find one so I wanted to see if anyone here could help me.

When I attached a monitor to it the only thing that appeared was a gray screen with the pinwheel at the bottom.

Does anyone have an idea of how to do this or where I should look?

Good solid advice from kryten2, however, if you're direct attached monitor is giving a spinning (pin) wheel then i highly suggest hard rebooting it (holding power button), so that it will respond. after that you can manually re enable the screen sharing or anything else you may require...

Thanks for the advice. I didn't want to have to reboot the system because I didnt want to hinder anyone who might need to access the pos off of it but the bad weather we had yesterday forced it to shut down. When I turned it on today everything was working. Its lagging bad but now I can access the screen.
