After years of daydreaming about it I recently bought a Mac Pro 2013. It came with a 1TB SSUAX that was too small for me. I bought a Sintech ST-NGFF2013C that others seem to be happy with and a WD-Black SN750 2TB (without the heatsink).

Install went smooth, afterwards I let Photos and Spotlight do it's indexing for a couple of days. Activity Monitor implies they are done.

Now I still see unexpected low write speeds. Also I cannot boot without clearing the PRAM every time, otherwise the Mac reports that it did not find a boot drive.

The read speed tells me the drive is installed correctly, but write speed should be nearly the physical maximum of the PCIx4 bus of the Mac.

What am I missing...?

OK, forget about the write speeds. I can live with that. The boot issue is the really pressing one. Funnily enough the manufacturer of the adapter guided me to this forum for help...

I still have no idea what to do. I narrowed it down a little though: the SSD is only visible when doing a reboot (thus PRAM-reset) - when I boot from a "Install Big Sur" USB stick, disk first aid does not see the SSD.

What adapters/SSD are you using? I did assume that nearly everybody on this forum with a trash can Mac Pro by now was on some sort of adapter solution.

Does anyone have any idea what I could do to find the mistake? I have no windows Laptop to check the firmware on the WD SN750 or even update it. Since 11.0 the Mac is on 425.0.0.0.0.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Looks like you forgot to switch it to 4k LBA. Have same setup, even the version with the heatsink and no issues with the trashcan. Also try updating the firmware through W10, sometimes WD issues fixes fortheir SSDs, maybe I've already installed one with fixed FW
