Weak highlighting in El Capitan

Is there any means of increasing the intensity of highlighting in El Capitan ? How it has happened, I do not know, but when I select text now, whether in my text-editor or in an email-message, &c., it is impossible to see the highlighting.

Have you checked in "System Preferences->General->Highlight Color" to see if anything has changed?
