Weather HD app for iPad reveals why Apple may have just created a new billion dollar industry
Tuesday, April 20, 2010

"Much has been said and written about the magic of the iPad, how it would be the savior of industries, and how it would transform and reshape the world," vimov blog reports.

"Having an application, Weather HD, in the Top 10 top-paid list, we wanted to share our early look into how the numbers really are, and what the iPad App Store is shaping to become," vimov reports. "We will use our own sales numbers to estimate how everyone else is faring out, and how much the iPad App Store is worth."

"Based on the sales and ranks of our very own Weather HD, we estimate that the Top 1,000 iPad paid applications are making about $372,000 per day, which sums up to about $136 million per year," vimov reports. "This figure is based on there being only 500,000 iPads in the market, and is accounting only for the application sales in the United States. If the iPad App Store were to be like the iPhone’s, then 40-60% of the sales would occur internationally, so on average that figure would rise to become $272 million per year."

"We believe this to be a conservative estimate," vimov reports. "If the iPad were to enjoy a lucrative growth as the iPhone’s, which rose from 100 million downloaded applications in the first 2 months to 4 billion 19 months after, we can easily see the iPad’s App Store becoming a $1 billion per year market in 2 years."

vimov reports, "This is quite remarkable. While Apple has re-invented how music is sold and played, and then went again to re-invent the mobile industry, the iPad is an entirely new market. Two weeks ago Apple did not just introduce a new type of computer, they put the seeds of a new market that is bound to make many developers and publishers… happier."

That doesn't make sense, if there are roughly 500,000 iPads out there, and the Weather HD app costs .99, then how can they be making $372,000 per day?

$372,000 is their estimate for the top 1,000 paid iPad apps. Not just Weather HD.

I doubt iPad is going to sell as much as iPhone, just as laptops don't sell as well as cell phones. This is going to be a nice side income for Apple, but not as big a hit as iPhone.

They only get 70% of the sales. So to make $372k, they'd need to sell $531,428 worth. At 99 cents per copy, they'd need to sell 536,795 copies.

If the $372k figure were just for them (as opposed to the top 1k apps), that would mean everyone with an iPad was buying a new copy of Weather HD every day, and 37,000 people were buying 2 copies of it every day. :)

I'm either r3tarded or confused. If the 372k revenue per day figure is fornthe top 1000 apps, then why does the article single out weather HD? Couldn't it just have easily singled out keynote, or racing HD, or any of the other 999 top paid apps?

The article was written by the developer of Weather HD so the only sales figures they had were the Weather HD ones. They used that, along with a model of how they expect relative sales to be between Apps with different positions in the top 1k list, to make predictions for the sum daily sales of the top 1k.

Because its a blog story by vimov who created the weather HD app. The 1st sentence pretty much explains it... :)

Interesting article, you really need to be in the top 15 to make decent money and I know that after the top 100 sales really fall from there. But for a brand new market not too shabby, hope things will continue to grow at a good pace from here.

Oh ok so they are using weather HD sales figures and extrapolating that ***** over the top 1000 paid apps given price of other 999 apps coupled with estimated sales of the other apps relative to weather HD.

Is that all that app does? Fly through whatever conditions you are currently having? here is where I go to get my weather. www.weather.gov

I have Weather HD and 2 other Weather Apps installed, and when I want a quick weather forecast I go to Weather HD because it's a quick interface for giving you the current temperature, the conditions, and the high/low for the day (without trying to load stuff in the background like Radar maps and news stories about the weather). Other than that, yeah, it's just video of flying through the current weather conditions.

I have to say weather HD looks much better than that site :) for $1 I am happy to have a better looking interface to view something

Yeah I understand. I just need a bit more detail than that. I guess I am sort of a weather nerd. Nothing better than getting your forecast straight from the national weather service.
