Shouldn't the weather on my watch (series 8, 45mm) update automatically if it's connected to my wifi?

The weather won't update until I've 'awoken' my iphone.

I assume you have the Background Update turned on on your phone? It should then. I have two weather apps....Apple weather and Fox Weather and they update.

Edit: The Background App Refresh on the watch needs to be turned on also.

Is the 'background update' setting in the Watch app?

It has been apparently.

OK, dang. Other than doing a soft reset on both the watch and phone I don't know what else it could be. Like I said, my two weather apps update fine on their own.

Could it have to do with the watch being linked/connected to my iPhone?

Check in the watch app on your phone to make sure the watch is listed as being connection.
Watch is connected. But shouldn't the WiFi provide data to weather (and others) app even if there's no connection to phone?

Yes, when the phone is off and wifi is on the watch, it should update. Of course the settings for the app can only be changed on the phone in the watch app which you already have it turned on to update. It doesn't make sense why it won't update.

It looks on your screenshot above that wifi isn't turned on?

The WiFi is turned off temporarily. Thus issue is happening with wifi ON

Just conducted a little 'experiment' with Mail on the watch.
I checked mail on my watch while it was connected to the iPhone and it successfully connected to server and retrieved mail.
When I put the iPhone in 'Airplane' mode and went to check for new mail in the Mail app on the watch it said 'cannot get mail.....no connection....'
So between this and the weather app it appears my watch is reliant on its connection to my phone.
How do I change that?
I'd like to be able to access stuff like weather and email WITHOUT my phone connected to watch.

My issue is that the weather app defaults to Cupertino after the watch is turned on.

I have to either swipe delete the city, or open the weather app on my phone, for all my regular cities to magically populate in again.

Effing annnoying.

tl;dr What ended up working was adding a new city to Weather on my phone, which updated everything on the watch.

I had the same problem yesterday with my Series 8. All it would show is current location, Cupertino and New York. I tried to resync data, power cycle the phone and watch, checked all the settings.

But something funny is going on with Weather, because last week I deleted a city and it mysteriously came back the next day at the bottom of my list. I deleted it a second time and the next day it was back at the top of my list. I deleted it a third time and it came back yet again. Finally I rearranged the list, deleted the city a fourth time, and it has not come back since.

Yes, hopefully it stays through a power off/on.

I delete the Cupertino city and then it refreshes. I’ll try the add a city
