web hosting question/recommendation

sorry if this seems to be redundant but i couldn't find enough specific answers to my questions:

currently i'm have a website with Hostgator. my website has very low traffic and very low data volume. i also have a few emails with this domain. however the email with hostgator is not very good because you can only check it 60 times per hour and with a number of people accessiing it this can be too low. also Hostgator does not offer webdav.

so i think about going to another service.

i need:
-easy set up of everything
-good support
-unlimited email that actually works with a mail client as imap on mac and pc
-webdav access to a kind of "idisk" for a number of people
-hosting of a simple website

DREAMHOST does that but the reviews on their own forum are horrible. Also i can't find any details on the WEBDAV. Can i use the service like a webbased harddrive (with password) from mac and pc like apples idisk?

Any other suggestions? (.mac is too slow for my uses and also doesn't offer enough email adfresses)

I also host with Hostgator. According to their support docs, you can check email 60 per hours PER EMAIL ADDRESS. Not per domain (which, honestly, is what I originally thought). So it doesn't matter how many email addresses a domain has. Each one can check every minute.

As for WebDav, there may not be much to do. But have you tried posting on their forums/contacting CS? Hostgator has implemented several changes due to customer request. Maybe you can get them to support webdav, too.

Just a thought. I don't have much of a recommendation for you. I spend a long time finding a new web host a year or two ago and finally settled on Hostgator. I've been pretty much happy with them. Not perfect, but I don't think there's a perfect one out there.

well, the thing is that as soon as a few computers start checking mail it slows down a lot. don't know what the problem is. webmail works but as soon as you use outlook or mac mail as client i have problems. in addition right now for the past 6 weeks i can't use any mail client only webmail. and support couldn't fix it. anyway, they have no webdav and we like to have a web based disk.

well, for a business you don't want to have google mails on your business card. so i would prefer info@mydomain.com. can that somehow be done with google?

ASmallOrange are generally recommended, and are generally pretty good, but I'm not sure if they'll be suitable for this, as you look like you need quite a bit of space.
 
I use 1&1 and have the business plan since I needed the space and it's a great price. I have had to call the Tech support a few times and within 5-10mins. my questions were answered and I was all set without any downtime.
So far so good with them as the next and last thing for me to do is setup a newsletter, which isn't hard.

With Google Apps for Small Business you get all the Googe and Gmail apps for free, and set up under your own Domain. For instance: name@yourdomain.com, suppor@yourdomain.net, et al...

I do this for all my clients, as it allows sharing of calendars, contacts, and documents. You get your own Start Page and it's all somewhat customizable with your company logo and some color schemes.

Nothing beats it.

I use 1and1 for hosting and have been pretty satisfied with their service.

I'm a noob here, but can google apps be used in conjunction with iWeb and hosting by .Mac?

I was gonna get a .Mac acct and use iWeb to set up a basic site. How exactly do u use google apps with your website?

I have been using ComputingHost for almost a year now and I just recently renewed my domain name and hosting for another year, so it is a clear indication of how satisfied I am with their service. Do take a look, they are quite affordable too.

I don't mind noob questions. But I do mind lazy ones (which I'm not saying yours is, necesarily). Follow the link i posted above and chose "compare plans" (or some similar), then choose the free plan. Sign Up and then read the instructions. It involves placing a file at root or changing some cname records.

Try to figure it out - then come back and ask more specific questions if you still have them.
