I am currently using Earthlink for my web hosting needs and have for the past 4 years. You would think for being listed for that long, my rankings would improve in Google. Can anyone recommend a better / more feature based web hosting service. Reason for asking is that I recently looked upon 1and1 (another web hosting service) for their features and they offered a program to embed into a website to allow Google to rank the page easier / quicker. Is their such a thing.

Whatever you do, don't go for 1and1. Just google for "1and1 reviews" and you will see what I mean. Don't poke them with a ten foot pole.

If you want to have a better Google rank you need to design your page better, and get real sites to link to you. it has nothing to do with the server it sits on, some companies will for a fee blast links to your site all over the web, but these are all BS sites and can hurt your page rank

I apologize for sounding naive, but what exactly do you mean having pages link to you. Do I go to another website and have them provide a link back to my website? How does that work? Also, my competition who is completely clueless in Web Design and how it all works, not that I am an expert but have some idea always manages to come up as a number 2 or 3 in the google searches every time I type in a keyword related to both our websites.

what you need is decent sites having hyper links back to your site, have your meta keywords and description, setup to define what your site is about and what you do, also have the text on your site clearly say what you are about and what you do.

X1Lightning, thanks for your replies. This should help quite a bit. Do you recommend any other web hosting services beside Earthlink?

For a web hosting service there are other things that you should consider, such as would you prefer managed hosting or can you manage it yourself, what type of server technology do you require, do you need database and ecommerce services....im sure the list goes on.

Send me a message and I can put you in touch with a company that offers hosting from $8 a month ...

I've used ICDSoft for years. Their customer service is fast and courteous beyond belief. From 6 USD a month. Well worth a look.

I love hostgator.com. Great prices and reliability. I can't speak to the technical support because I've never needed it. :D

I prefer Dreamhost, they give you a ton of storage space and bandwidth per month. Some have reported issues with these folks, but so far (since over one year ago) I have had no issues whatsoever, and their support response time is excellent.

If you don't need so much bandwidth and storage space, I recommend hostm.com. I used to host my website with them, until I needed more bandwidth and space.

Hope that helps :)

By the way, Dreamweaver has a wicked referral program. You get $97 per new user, minus any promotions or deductions you decide to them. I've created a promotion with a $97 discount with any yearly plan, so I will get nothing if you sign-up under the code MAXDISCOUNTS123. I'm not sure if this post violates spam policies, if it does, please let me know and I will remove this link ASAP. I do not earn anything from this, unless you decide to pay monthly. The max allowable discount for a monthly plan is $50, $60 and $80.

Thanks :)

How is Fat Cow (fatcow.com)?

Anyone have any suggestions pro/con in regards to Fat Cow?

I've seen them advertise for years in the Mac-centric magazines, so they've been around...best I've been able to find on them research-wise is that they seemed to have gone through some 'troubles' in the 2004-ish time period, which one review claimed had to do with them being bought out (or something).

300GB for under $100/year sounds tempting.

I've just not really been all that satisfied with any of the "host review" sites I've found, given how several of them seem to be hosted by the very companies that they're reviewing.

I'm not sure about the Google thing, but I've been extremely happy with bluehost. Reasonable prices, nice storage and bandwidth limits, great reliability, and although I've never needed it, their customer service is supposed to be very good.
