Web Hosting & Shopping Cart Info...?

Hi,

I am designing a website for a small local company. They would like to have an online store where visitors could purchase their products. I have tried to research various shopping cart solutions on the web, but am not sure which to use or what I need. I am a relative newbie at web development. I have designed a few sites, but have never implemented a shopping cart / ecommerce situation. Any help or advice would be MUCH appreciated!!!

I am using Dreamweaver, if that makes a difference.

depending on what type of goods they are looking to sell (downloads or physical items) there are a number decent options. i've used iSell with MacDock hosting and it's really nice and a breeze to setup and manage. it also integrates with RapidWeaver which is nice. another one to check out is Shopify.

While I agree that calling in a pro for the job is in the best interest of the client, and that's nothing personal but just the facts, if it absolutely isn't going to be done I'd recommend Cube Cart. It's decent enough for a small online store, and accepts several different payment methods. If you don't know Php, no matter which cart you look at you'll be calling a pro.

However, at some point in time you're going to have to put the clients best interests at the top of the list. If your current skill level can't tackle it, call a professional.

It might not be what you'd like to hear, but the end result is a happy client.

I'm afraid I'll have to agree..

Sure, you can use some freely available webshop scripts, if you like.

However, where you can just try some stuff on a normal website, when you're developing a webshop, you HAVE to know what you're doing, since those things could be abused if you don't.

If you've never really seen any PHP nor ASP.NET or JSP or whatever, I'd recommend against doing this yourself...
