Hi, I am looking for a company to host my website, and was looking for some input -- have any of you used or had an experiece with BlueHost? ..or have any others that you like?

i don't know anything about BlueHost, this is the first i've heard of them... but as i've said in other threads on MR... A Small Orange is absolutely wonderful.

Thanks! I will look into them. :)

EDIT

They are sold out of dedicated severs... Anyone have another hosting company they favor?

You might want to PM "ITASOR". I have been hosting with him for a few months now with 0 down time. Great Service. I pay $2.50 a month for 2.5Gb Bandwidth and 250Mb Space. :)

I use ModHost (www.modhost.com) for all of my hosting needs. They are a great group of folks with outstanding support, speed, reliability, and uptime. I highly recommend them.

There's one other company that I used a while back for a dedicated server and they were perfect as well, gonna take some time to think of the name though as I can't remember it. If I do I'll make sure to post it up.

Why don't you just use your MacBook. ;) J/K J/K

I'm curious as to what you need a dedicated server for.

You can't be serious.

Does he have a website?

It's not a dedicated server...

Anyway, ASmallOrange is cute and has nice plans...but my experience with them so far has been absolute crap.

My hosting has been down a couple times a week for the past 3 weeks. Twice I've seen the server load spike to over 1000 and they don't seem too responsive when someone else on the server is getting DDoS'd, knocking everyone out.

Right now the server has only been up for a week.

Bah.

Bluehost doesn't seem to offer dedicated servers. Are you sure you need one? If you do actually need 10GB+ of space and 100GB+ of transfer (very few sites do) I would suggest avoiding ultra budget hosts.

My recommendation would be TJR Networks. Possibly the plans may be a bit small if you have evaluated your needs properly, but still check them out. For your own sake, make your decision based on feedback on forums like this, Sitepoint and WebHostingTalk, not on price or which host claims to offer you the most space and bandwidth for the most ridiculously low price (because they will cut you off well before the limits due to CPU usage or some other limit). :)

this may help because I was checking out bluehost and lunarpages as well as ASO.

http://www.webhostingjury.com/

a lot of the other top 10 list I've reviewed have Bluehost and lunar rated highly, but the user reviews on the above site seem to back up these good reviews as well. If you look in the left hand menu there is a drop down menu of almost every webhosting company with user reviews.

Some other places I was considering using who were ranked highly on some sites had terrible reviews on the webhostingjury site which made me question how legit some websites reviews are

Did you return it yet? ;) I'm sorry, I'll stop joking around. But seriously, what kind of site do you have planned that requires a dedicated server?

No, I'm not returning it. I was told, that because I have an in house server for company management, that I would need a dedicated server to provide a login-feature on my site... maybe this isn't the case, I have hired an IT guy to work for me, so he can figure it out.

no problem, you're welcome. I've done so much research my head is going to explode. Funny thing, I was all gung ho and went to call bluehost and the 800 was busy which kind of made me wonder, wtf.. So still searching.. I really was impressed with Network Solutions. Their tech support and customer support was really good. However, someone told me mysql databases run slow on their servers. Yet, I dont know the circumstances behind it or how long ago that was, so that may be bogus. The ecommerce packages are kind of expensive, but everything else seemed ok. let me know what you come up, you seem pretty determined to find someone good and reliable as I am.

That definitely isn't the case, well, I guess it could be if you needed the hosted site to call back to you company servers, but even in that case there are better ways to do that - such as nightly updates or web service calls. In any case (lots of cases there), I recommended you get a hosting account and if you do a little research here you'll find many ASO lovers here. Personally, I have experience with SurpassHosting and loved them. I have since moved onto RailsPlayground, only because I have 3 sites and wanted to learn Ruby. So far so good.

Remember opinions are like....XXXXXXXXX....everyone has one - so take mine with a grain of salt and a sheet of TP.

PM me if you have other questions.

I was the same way -- I was ready to go with Bluehost, but then I held off.. they seem to have good reviews out there, and a few negative, of course, but from what I can see and have read, they seem to be good. I was also impressed by Network Soultions -- our sister company uses them, and they love them, that may be another option. I'm going to continue looking.

ASO rent servers from servermatrix/theplanet. I had a server direct from them for a year or two before I bought my own server and went with colocation (much cheaper in the long run).

I didn't have any problems with them.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems, but I've been with ASO for about 6 months now, and haven't had any of the troubles you've mentioned. They're always super-fast responding to my help tickets (usually less than 10 minutes) and even transfered and upgraded one of my forum databases for me. No problems with access to my site, even when one of my stories was "Dugg" recently. Tim even refreshed my bandwidth stats manually in the middle of the night, so I could make sure I wouldn't exceed my limit.

I've never been with a hosting company that gave that kind of service.

Maybe I should call Lunarpages and see the vibes I get from them also.

Do u know if your sister company uses any mysql databases by chance? curious as to what their experience has been in regards to that... thanks..

I have been using BlueHost for about a year now and have no problems. At the moment I have 4 other add-on domains set-up thru them and everything works great. I only found the need to call them once and was able to talk to a live knowledgeable person at 2:30am CST. I would highly recommend them.

They are excellent, great people, and they have dedicated hosting. We've been using them for close to five years with almost no downtime, and the few problems we've had have been sorted within minutes. Check out their rates (and if you go with them, feel free to tell them you were referred by Todd from www.greydayproductions.com, we get goodies for referring people).

I've used them before, it was good service. Only thing I didn't like is that they don't use the CPanel plugin which I'm most used too and seems more powerful than the alternatives some companies (such as dreamhost) use.

Dreamhost sucks.
