Web Schools

Hello -

I'm a student studying Computer Information Systems, but I want a program that offers a greater focus on web design AND development. I've been trying to find out what schools are best so that I can transfer, but I'm not really sure which ones are the best.

What schools are best? Where did you go? Or if you didn't go to school for web design/development, what did you do instead?

Bumping isn't nice. It hasn't been that long, people do work you know.

Anyway, I didn't go to school for web design, but did look at options and have talked to people about it and I've generally seen better options at the community college level for web teachings. I went to an accredited college and they offered almost nothing on web design, though this of course varies greatly among colleges.

I've taught myself my web skills and have gotten quite far that way, and though I'm not technical a web person by job title I often get involved on web projects because of what I know.

That kind of leads me into your mentioning of wanting a tighter focus on web design. Though I understand what you're saying, you also want to be skilled in other things like business and writing, etc. to make you more well rounded and a better candidate for jobs. These days there are tons of people with web skills because it's easy to pick up the basics, and you'll need a way to pull yourself away from the pack and be seen as a great investment. I've gotten great job offers because of my mix of trades so just keep that in mind.
 
You'll learn a lot more with a few good web design/dev books, some good web resources, and some time to try things out and play around with them. Some schools get caught up in old technology and end up teaching you things that are already outdated. Case in point: A friend of my mom's is taking a "web design" class as part of her masters degree in library sciences or something like that and she asked me to help her with some of it. I was appalled at the stuff she was learning. They were teaching HTML from back in the pre-CSS days where you had to use font tags and the like to format your pages... With technology changing as fast as it does in the web design/development market, you are better off creating your own curriculum.
 
Most schools are way behind the times. Most design-oriented school teach flash (not even actionscript), nevermind standards-based markup. Most tech schools will teach Java or Microsoft stuff. School is great for fundamentals and killing time.

If you want to learn best practices and cutting edge design/development for the web, you will need to read websites, books, and/or attend some of the conferences.

What sort of conferences are there that I can attend?
