I've run into an odd problem with the particular video player a small-town news website uses.

Videos play just fine on iOS Safari. But when you try to play them on macOS Safari, the video is extremely corrupt. They look like this on two different Macs, running macOS 11 and 12, respectively, so it's not an account-specific problem. Every other web video also plays fine on my Mac Safari, and the odd videos play fine in other browsers.

A couple of samples are on these pages:

It's not that I can't work around this easily enough, but the geek in me is really curious about what would cause a video to play only on mobile Safari, not desktop.

Anybody seen something like this? Any idea what's up here?

It seems Safari 15.4 on macOS has a problem with playing webm files.
Even the downloaded file doesn’t play in Safari, but plays perfectly in Chrome/Edge and Firefox.

There are some recent WebKit bugs reported for webm, like “Decoding webm file with more than 2 channels will fail”
