You are correct with yahoo you can only do video and text chat.
Here are you options for video:
1. You use AIM/iChat, he uses AIM.
2. You use Yahoo IM, he uses Yahoo IM.
3. You use aMSN or Mercury, he uses MSN Messenger.
Done.
To comment on #3, most people don't know that they can webcam chat with MSN users because Messenger on Mac can't do it. Most people use Mercury IM for Mac to do webcam IM with Windows MSN Messenger users, but it's slow. You can't get more than 6-7 fps. Even the creator says you could probably never get 8 fps because it's slow, as it's Java based and there's something weird in how it does video.
However, aMSN is the option I never hear people talk about. Get aMSN for your Mac, and use it. Simple stupid easy to use. Just get a Mac compatible camera.
Only expensive Logitech ones work on Macs, the iSight, and several others. You don't have many choices. The Macally IceCam is what I have, and it works very very well, although it won't work with iChat out of the box because Apple wants you to use a FireWire webcam with iChat, and how many of
those are there? iSight, and a few others, I believe. There's another program that allows you to use regular USB webcams with iChat, but this USB webcam still must be Mac compatible. The
Macally IceCam is compatible with Macs, and is cheap.

There's a forum for aMSN that'll help you bigtime if you run into trouble.
