My husband bought a MacBook Pro from Best Buy a few months ago. A free 6-month Webroot program came with it.

Today, I got notice that Webroot/Geek Squad charged us -- automatically -- $52.something for renewal.

We did not want renewal. The nag screen which comes up repeatedly all day long does not give us a way to say no.

Apparently just clicking on the X at the top left does nothing so we got fraudulently charged. But he couldn't tell me how to get rid of it.

I talked to some GeekSquad guy in India who is refunding the money but we can't get rid of Webroot because the Mac says it's open.

When I close it in Activity Monitor because it pops right back up, like a virus.

I am far too old to waste the amount of time trying to fix this problem.

How do we remove this virus-acting thing?

Geek Squad is the bane of the tech industry. They're so awful. Hope you get it sorted.

The SE results showed the thread at the top, but I thought, "Why would I go to a forum run by thieves who are virus merchants for help? :)

Thank you. It did the trick!

Agreed!

When I was trying to sort out the money part, I spoke to a Geek who was a particular jerk, and I said, "Why on earth would I pay MONEY to a band of gypsies who are not even in the same country as I am? Particularly when I have a Mac?" He hung up. LOL

I got it sorted out monetarily and the link mentioned twice here got us through the removal process more easily than I could have imagined.

No idea. Probably the latter.
