Here's the situation. I volunteered to help with website maintenance and small changes at my son's school. I have downloaded the entire site to my hdd. It is just a bunch of files (html, graphics, and xml I think from the extensions) Can someone help me with software suggestion to actually edit the html. I am hoping for a program that would open the files based on where it is on my hdd and then allow editing of simple things like changing out the calendar and changing the director's message every month, nothing complicated. I don't have any html experience, but I am pretty good a learning new stuff.

Dream weaver would be the equivalent of front page for mac.
I would suggest learning HTML tho and use coda for a editor

Ouch, to compare DW with Frontpage...unless Frontpage has changed drastically in the last 5 years I would say that Frontpage is DW's bitch. BUT, you can use DW or Contribute to name a couple.

The stickies in this forum list a number of software solutions. Partly depends if you want a graphical interface or a code view (or both). Also depends if you want free or not.

If you are not the only one that will be working on the files you'll want to consider how programs change line endings. Windows only understands certain line endings and so may be hard to view after you edit them. With a program like TextWrangler (free) you can choose what line endings you want (Windows, Mac, Unix), which is very helpful to any Windows user helping out with the web design. I know other programs can use different line endings too, but not sure which ones. DreamWeaver may.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering if any of you might have a suggestion for a free or inexpensive graphical program that definitely can work with an existing website...it seems Contribute is a little pricey for me. OP Pedrotex

Kompozer would be one to look at. There's not a ton of options for free WYSIWYG HTML editors for the Mac, or even Windows really. Search the forums too, this is a question that has popped up a number of times over the years.

hi! i'm also a newbie webmaster..and i really want to build a website can someone give me a website builder for free..is there a free website builder??
