I'm new to mac. I visit a number of forums that require passwords. Everytime I shut down the browser (i have tried a number of them) or re-start the computer, I'm required to enter my user name and password on most but not all the sites. I don't understand why these are not remembered.

What web browser are you using? Most of them can remember passwords if you tell them to. I don't think Safari is set to remember passwords by default, but that is very easy to change.

Another possibility is that you have cookies turned off. Many sites, including this one, use cookies to identify you later. That way you don't have to login every time you restart your browser.

It happens with all the Mac web browsers. Never had this happen with any browser on Windows. Just checked and all the cookies are allowed (Camino)

Not sure then with Cookies on. Camino should be as capable as any. One other thought on cookies would be trying to delete them and see if they reset to a logged in status.

Perhaps the sites you're using have something specific that works with IE. One last thought, are these sites using the Passport system from MS? Kind of a shot in the dark.
