Any that don't involve tethered reboot? If not should we expect some soon?

Nope, but I'm getting a new contract and think I'll get another 3Gs and sell my current one (I've moved country and it presents the best value for money). I just don't want to end up with a tethered only solution.

Is there anyway to check in store if it is likely to be the new bootrom before I purchase?

If you can get a look at the serial number first, look for one before week 37. Between weeks 37 and 42 it's iffy. After week 42, you are unlikely to find the old version of iBoot.

The serial number is the same as the IMEI? I seem to remember there being 2 numbers on the outside of the box... And which two numbers represent the week? The last two? Presumably week 37 is labelled 37?

Missed this thread, did ya? It was easy to miss, being hidden like it was on the first page. Click Here.

Don't you people who start these threads think if there was a solution, or even the idea of one, that it'd be announced from the macrumors mountaintop and stickied at the top of this forum? No, let's start another thread cuz you never know, there could have been a secret solution announced since last night at 8:37 (the last post in the other, 'hidden', thread).

Yeh, I hadn't noticed when I posted the question. But since then I have read that post and another it links to, but neither say how to identify which week the phone is from the serial number...

I want to try and avoid purchasing a week 40+ to start with.

The serial number is not the same as the IMEI. The serial number is labeled "Serial No." on the box. The first two digits represent the factory it was manufactured in, the third digit represents year of manufacture, and the fourth and fifth digits represent the week of manufacture. Those fourth and fifth digits are the ones you are interested in.

My serial number, for instance, starts 88930. My 3GS was therefore made in Shenzhen, China in the 30th week of 2009.

Given the fact we're around the 48th week and how many iPhones are sold each week, you're running out of time, if you haven't already.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll be dashing to the shops asap then...

wow I am one lucky mofo. I bought my wife's white 16GB 3GS and my black one about 2 weeks ago and they jail-breaked just fine with Blackra1n.

Checking now I see mine is week 40. I assume my wife's is the same...

Have you tried powering down or rebooting your iPhone and see if it starts up w/o blackra1n? Blackra1n jailbreaks all iPhones no prob, it's when you shut down or reboot that you find out whether or not you have a tethered jailbreak.

I've rebooted mine plenty and the only problem I have found is when I reboot it while attached to a charger it gives me a sad iphone picture and puts it into safe mode until i press restart or something and then it's all good. If I reboot as normal (not connected to a charger) it is fine.

I just checked with my wife and hers is a week 39 from factory 88 (mine is a week 40 from factory 87). I am not sure if she has rebooted hers, but she's on 3% battery at work right now, so I guess I'll be finding out later today if hers is ok or not.

Sounds like you have a bad charger, there. Make sure it's providing the right voltage and amperage.

Sniff... I went to the stores and the earliest I could find was week 43... Looks like I just missed the boat.

I'll have to wait for Geohot to find a solution. Please Geohot, help us!!!

sorry

George is mad cause he didn't find all his red balloons. So he said he said he not working on the tethering for a while. He said go ask the MIT crew! the is why I like the Dev team there ego's are in check!

Looks like it's going to be a while then.....maybe I will hit the genius bar for a refurb...I'm pretty sure I have a crack on this white 3gs somewhere..

He didn't really say that, he was quoting egohot on Twitter, set up by some douche to antagonise the poor guy - though he did say he's not working on a non-tethered jailbreak.

People need to give the guy a break. He's essentially working for free and doing some great work, then handing it over to others to refine. Why he's getting so much stick over a few balloons I don't know. But there is no reason why the same people who benefit from geohot (and are probably also the ones who never donate) have to be so harsh to the guy. I'm sure he'll come around.

Not true either

It was geohot changed his id to egohot. I fallow geohot as well as musslenerd so unless egohot hacked my acct and added himself in Also If you fallow him you. Know he is annoyed right now and has no plans to work on the project, or any jb.
