Hi, im a new mac user and on windows every week i delete my history,temporary files etc. to clear disk space. is there something like this i should be doing on my mac?

It's not really necessary. Most of your programs should only hold to a certain amount of history (defined either by time or number of entries). That sort of stuff doesn't really take up much space.
Some people will say repairing permissions or forcing some UNIX jobs that only run if your computer is on at night, but none of these nor anything else is necessary and there is likely no benefit to them either.
So basically... nothing. Just enjoy using your computer.
Then again, you could always update your virus definitions once a week or so...

Just use it, Macs work, period. I check/repair permissions maybe once every couple of months and after installing a application. My Macs run 24/7 except for the 2 Performas. I re-boot them twice a week. Windows' ways are like a bad drug, you've got to flush that stuff out of your head. Its great you use a Mac, now you can enjoy your life because it won't be wasted on MS Windows BS.

there are various apps that you can run that will perform various system maintenances automatically.
i use generally 'onyx'. it's a free download and quite easy to use. cleans browser cache, deletes temp files, repairs permissions, etc.

another one is called anacron. It runs all the jobs for you. I think it checks whether the tasks have been done in a specified time period and if they haven't it runs them.
