As the Olympic Games started last weekend, I would like to see you Go for Gold.

Interprete this any way you like. It doesn't have to be pictures from any sports event, nor does it have to be literal gold.

Standard rules apply.

Follow all relevant local laws regarding stay-at-home orders. If you can't go outside, try and take a photo at home or grab one from the archives.

  • Do not comment, vote, react or click "like" on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, check the dates in the title.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends at 6:00pm 8/3/2021, US Eastern Time (Midnight GMT).

I'll start. I'm ready to come back and play.

I don't know what gem was used for this cabochon. It is polished perfectly smooth. The texture is the result of the way the light plays within the stone.

Technically I didn't go for gold, but I found it anyway! (I didn't realize it was still leaf season in November at Zion)

The contest is closed.

I have to admit I had hoped for more entries. Oh, well. At least the judging won't take too long. ;)

@deep diver That certainly looks like gold. Without the explanation I would have thought it's some metal cylinder. (On a technical note, which doesn't affect the judging: does the picture appear somewhat blurry for anyone else? Has the forum software done its thing again?)

@oblomow Ah, the poor catholic church. They could only afford to gild half the walls... ;) Anyway, great picture capturing all the fine detail even in the darker spots.

@Hughmac Great sunset with some dramatic clouds. The silhouetted weeds nicely break up the horizon line.

@mollyc A somewhat golden butterfly in golden light. Beautiful picture with the mollyc trademark dreamlike atmosphere of ephemeralness.

@stillcrazyman That's a Golden Hour if I've ever seen one. Wonderful serene atmosphere and stunning colours.

@mackmgg Great picture of trees in the golden season with warm colours. I like the dramatic lighting, which reminds me of baroque paintings.

And here are the final results:

Bronze: shared by mollyc and mackmgg.

Silver: oblomow

Gold: stillcrazyman

Congratulations, Stillcrazyman and everyone! Somehow this week slipped right on past and I never got around to either rummaging in my archives for a "golden" image or going out and shooting something fresh and new. It was an interesting and certainly timely topic!
