Robert Plant once sang:
what kind of fool am I
(Heaven knows) why you take an eye for an eye
(Heaven knows) what comes over me
You were pumping iron as I was pumping irony

This week's contest is a two-fer:

irony, for those clever captures that highlight contradictions, absurdities, or simply elicit a guffaw; and/or
iron, in all its shapes and forms

Ironic-iron may invite a double-word score, but let's just get our best efforts out there.

As always, standard rules apply:

  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

@Janichsan On message! But a somewhat fuzzy picture of a non-fuzzy subject — is the focus fade out at the edges helping? Seems to me it would be better sharp edge-to-edge. But of course a sharper image might feel like a stock photo. Anyway great contrast between a container and its contents.

@Strider64 I like the clear contrast between the delicate, living bird, and the inert, rusting iron. I also like the simple composition, and lost-to-blur background. But the picture for me is not just about contrast: the very fine detail of the bird’s feathers is of a similar scale (and therefore continuity) with the mottled iron surface.

@oblomow A pleasing mish-mash of parts, seemingly in various states of repair. Pieces bleeding off the edges of the frame suggest this industrial landscape might extend at some distance yet.

@C0ncreteBl0nde Forming-up rebar! There’s a nice conceptual continuity between the rebar’s uniform deployment and the uniformity of the worker’s shirts and hats. Nice composition of the men in various positions.

@Chuckeee A sculpture from predominantly cor-ten steel (I think,) which oxidizes (rusts) to form a protective surface that’s cleverly also fox or coyote-colored. People for scale helps too.

@tizeye Great capture. Who doesn’t love a good guffaw; terrific juxtaposition. Here’s a good example of the power of good framing, even though (I imagine) this was just a quick grab.

@lkalliance. Nice tripartite capture; I like, from foreground to background, the simple, clean bands of green, red and blue. I've been on a roadtrip recently and am often on the lookout for landscapes with more simple parts.

Thanks for everyone's entries! Happy to see a variety of takes on this admittedly-odd topic.

3rd: @Janichsan
2nd: @C0ncreteBl0nde and @Strider64
1st: @tizeye

Thanks for this week’s contest, @_timo_redux_. One of the things I like about participating here is that I learn what I’m doing right, lol.

Congrats to those on the podium!

Thank you for the podium spot.

As usual, I had a tough time choosing which photo to enter and even went so far as to roll dice (and then didn't choose THAT photo either!). I'm hopeless. Really different and fun contest; I wish I'd something more along the IRONY part of the contest, but alas...

Looks like it's back to you @tizeye !

Thank you and will have the next contest up later today. Actually, the inspiration comes from my morning hike today but have to put it in correct format.

Reaching the hike location, I drove by the sign which is no longer. Now just one business (Dragon Message) occupies the building and the twin sign framing has been removed. Worse, the adjacent parking lot where parked to take the photo served Office Depot that has also closed and is now a Dollar Tree.

Ugh. It's a trope but still true: always take the picture when you can, because undoubtedly that picture won't be there later
