It's that time of year when we celebrate the holidays in our own unique ways. Since the "holidays" encompass Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanza, Festivus and New Years (maybe more)... I'd like to see your best Holiday "Wow". I will leave you all to your own interpretation, but some suggestions include holiday light displays, ugly holiday sweaters, holiday food, or even your dog/cat with reindeer antlers ...

Be creative, think "outside the box", and have fun...

The usual rules apply:

· The photographs must be your own work.

· Be creative and have fun.

· You may only submit one photo per contest.

· Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

· Because we are in the midst of the holiday time of year, THIS contest will run for TWO WEEKS, starting NOW!

· At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.

· If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline for close, then a vote will be carried out to select a winner. This will be based on the number of "likes" each image has. In the event of a draw, the second place winner from the previous week will choose the tiebreaker.

· The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

Shutting this one down... here's the verdict...

@mollyc - Nothing quite like the joy that waking up to a living room full of presents will bring to a child. Not 100% sure this isn't "staged", but it captures a the "wow", in either case.

@The Bad Guy - This one caught me off guard. Love the whimsical and playful mood.

@Janichsan - The little town where I live still decorates the streets for the holidays - and I love the lights, the garland and the festive look... despite the fact that I live in the desert southwest.

@needfx - Nice job. The girl's face is largely covered with a scarf, but the joy is still evident.

@inkmich - Not sure what I am looking at, but it is quite festive... and it did make me say "wow"! Love the color and the beads...

@kallisti- Ok, this one wins the award for "most literal interpretation of the theme". Thanks for the chuckle.

@deep diver - Great photo of every kid in the world. At least around our house, these scenes are done in secret - one kid shaking a package and another "standing guard". Well done.

@CmdrLaForge - Lots of color here. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where to look.

@Susurs - This is a very good "first attempt". I might have preferred a bit more color, but good job.

@Alexander.Of.Oz - Nearly every neighborhood has a house like this. It brings back personal memories of driving around with my parents as a youngster "looking at the lights". Sadly, many of these wondrous displays of holiday festivity are falling victim to the Grinches.

The honor roll:

Honorable mention - best literal interpretation of the theme: @kallisti
3rd place - @mollyc, @deep diver
2nd place - @Alexander.Of.Oz
Winner - @The Bad Guy

Thanks for the mention! That was 100% not staged! He lost that stuffed animal at a friend's house (it showed up about eight months after this photo) and that fragom is no longer produced. But I found a substitute online somewhere and he was genuinely happy to see it again. Our Elf allegedly found the original and brought him home, and then this particular one was later dubbed the imposter. :D

Thanks for the feedback and commentary @dwfaust . We don't have too may around this way that go all out like that, so this one is a bit of a drawcard for the neighbourhood, with lots of people driving by and walking past. The husband here dresses up as Santa and has his garage setup as Santas cave for the kids to come have their photo taken with him, it's quite the grand operation he has there!

Looking forward to what sort of wickedness @The Bad Guy has in store for us with the next round...

Here's the Christmas Roo I mentioned above.

We have many "Grinches" around who don't enjoy the lights, hate the crowds and despise traffic that the "good" houses generate... I suppose if it was my neighbor, I'd have a different attitude... one very popular house managed to make a neighborhood enterprise out fo their efforts... he and his next door neighbor went all out on lights and mechanical displays, another neighbor was a photographer who sold photographic prints of the display, still another set up a hot cocoa and cookie stand... and then the local government got involved... and he closed up shop a couple of years ago.

It's madness when bureaucracy limits the sense of Community, and then the governments at all levels wonder why that sense of Community isn't there any more and waste mountains of cash on studies about what to do to get it back! Good lord, just make sure the cookies are fresh and the hot chocolate is above 60 degrees Celsius, so it's not making anyone ill, and leave it at that. It's not like those neighbours were making a commercial enterprise as an ongoing thing, it would have been only for a short period of time and adding so much to the local neighbourhood. :rolleyes:o_O
