Ok, here goes! I was going to go with a 'looking down' theme but realised that had been done before so thought I'd better think of something else. So, with climate change and global warming constantly in the news, I have gone with extreme weather. Whatever you have; sun, rain, floods, gales, storms, lightning - anything! - please submit them! :)

As always, standard rules apply:

  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible... BUT I am going to be away on holiday (vacation!) for two weeks by the end of this contest, and I'll be without a computer/laptop, and I find it a bit fiddly doing things like this on my iPhone, so I may need a volunteer to judge in my absence!
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

Here are a few to start things off:

EDIT: I've only just realised there was a 'Beat the Heat' contest a few weeks ago, hopefully we'll get some different entries for this one. Apologies, I've done this in a rush!

I knew immediately which photo I wanted to use. But...it turns out it wasn't mine. My wife and I took the same photo at Joshua Tree, shooting upwards at a Joshua tree with the blazing sun behind. Only when it came down to it, I thought hers was better...so I deleted mine. Arrrrgh!

So we'll go with the other extreme, and a frozen-over Minnehaha Falls.

Just a reminder that I am going to be away now for two weeks if someone would like to judge whilst I'm away. Thank you :)

ok, here are the results of voluntary dutch jury... Do with it what you like. I hope @Apple_Glen_UK is not too disappointed.

@Chuckeee : A lovely shot of a snowy steet. I can see the extreme weather theme, but it gives me christmas vibes.

@piatigorsky : Ominous clouds! Extreme weather is ahead. I like it.

@lkalliance : Definitely the result of extreme weather. A minor criticism is that I feel the image looks 'flat'. It misses a subject or a foreground.
I would love to the the Joshua tree image by the way.

@C0ncreteBl0nde : Again this gives me a warm cosy feeling: snow and lights. I like the image. I don't know if the vignetting was intentional, but it is a bit distracting.

@coolguy4747 : I have been staring at this image for some time. I like it: the composition and colors. I don't recognize the clouds so I can't determine if I'm seeing extreme weather.

@fauxtog : This looks extreme. And the B/W also works here.

@_timo_redux_ : I've been going over this image to see if it is extreme weather or just the result of a slow shutterspeed. I think the latter because of the splashes that the raindrops make on the roof.

the podium: it is difficult to choose between nr 1 and 2, but here it is:

3rd @piatigorsky
2nd @_timo_redux_
1st @fauxtog

Excellent choices, congrats winners! My photo was a dust storm ("haboob") rolling through Phoenix, AZ taken from the 22nd floor of an office building. It felt pretty extreme in real life - I did think it might not convey all of that exactly, but I liked the photo anyway.

Thanks for the podium finish, although I'll admit that I cheated a little—true, the photo is of quite extreme weather, but not extreme in the way you might expect! In fact, it was an abnormally hot (something like 35℃/95℉) and sunny day for November. This particular photo was taken using infrared film and a dark red infrared filter, which gives the clouds a very high contrast and ominous look. Following is the exact same scene on normal b&w film (actually the same roll of Ilford SFX film, which performs like regular b&w film if an infrared filter is not used; I had the camera on a tripod, so it is the exact same scene), and the same beach from the interior of a beachside Starbucks—shot on color film, naturally.

While my memory of that instance would be necessarily a little hazy, I do remember making this photo of the impossible amount of rain coming down because, in part, these deluges are becoming all too common. Just an open faucet from the sky, and (as all roof water in NYC is typically routed through a building, not outside, before connecting to the public sewers) I have the cellar water damage to prove it.

Thanks for both stepping up and providing the comments and judging! A real service.

I see a made a mistake in my typing. I meant that it must have been extreme weather. ( splashes of the big raindrops). So it was not the 'latter'.

Great podium! Congratulations to the winners; you had some really nice images.

In 2011-2014 I lived with my ailing mother in a fancy retirement village in Washington state as her caretaker/roommate. I was by far the youngest person living there. This was taken from the dining room looking out into a courtyard. Snow is not all that common in that part of the country (at least not compared to where I normally reside in the mountains) so I was documenting it. Yes, the vignetting was on purpose!

Thank you so much @oblomow for stepping up and doing the judging for the contest.

Oh, you know, that would definitely improve it, thanks for the suggestion! Something for me to keep in mind.

Here is the Joshua Tree photo. Again, this is not mine, that one is gone, but what I thought was a better version of the photo I shot. I mean, I was THERE, it was my wife shooting with her iPhone 4S.

Congrats to this week's winners, and thanks to oblomow for the stand-in.

Thank you for choosing my photo for the win 🤩. Congrats to all the participants and runner up’s 👍🏽.
Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to start the new thread, so @_timo_redux_ would you mind starting the new weekly contest thread.
