Weekly Photo Contest: Aug 29th - Sept 5th..... Long Exposure HDR

For this week's contest, I have chosen the theme "Long Exposure HDR"

I love working with long exposures and HDR so I thought why not put the 2 together? It is becoming vastly popular to shoot this way especially over in Europe. I would love to see what the MR community can come up with, as I see a lot of talented photographers here.

I have a feeling this is going to be very difficult to judge and do justice like the rest of you have done in the past......good luck.



Rules:
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • Be creative and have fun.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • The contest runs for one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)
  • At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
This contest will close on September 5 at 11:00 am EDT

This is a technique that I played with a couple of years ago and have never used again! Here's one from that brief time.

This one is beyond me at the moment too, only just learning the long exposure technique. HDR blending is something I want to learn at some stage, but one step at a time.

For those not sure about the long exposure skill level required. Mostly you just need an ND filter and play around with the exposures till it looks right.
Now if your just starting out and don't have an ND filter, you can always have a play with a welding mask if you have one.

HDR on the other hand is software. If you've got it, it's like most editing. A question of taste and personal style etc.

Unfortunately although I have an ND it is 52mm, and I no longer have any lenses of that filter size. I don't have a 52 to 49 or 52 to 46 adapter ring (yet).
My camera has an auto or manual HDR setting, so I will be having a go in the future.

It is but I think it's great. While I love all the beautiful photos every week, I like skills challenges. True HDR takes time to learn the post process. I have lots of long exposure but no true HDR. Just app filter HDR haha. If I had a little more time, I would totally try it. But sadly, I'm back to crazy work mode and haven't been able to enter any of the contests in a while :( Hoping more people try this weekend!

In my book anything longer than 1 second shutter speed qualifies for long exposure... so choke that lens down and lower the iso... squeeze out a 1-5 second exposure and you are good to go... also, if your ND filter is bigger than your lens... maybe you can hold it in front of the lens while it is taking the picture - or even mess about with it and get some funky light effects....

have a bash... you might take to it like a duck to water... you know, like you have with the legacy lenses... :)

OK, I've decided to plop one in, at the very least to get some feedback...



The River Medway at Hoo HDR BW by Hugh Russell, on Flickr

Sony NEX-6, Sigma 19mm f/2.8 Art
-3, 0, +3 bracket, 10 stop ND, 30 sec @ f/8

I ended up holding the ND filter in by packing tissue around the edge between it and the lens hood, but I have ordered a 46mm one for future use.

I do realize now I did put out a very hard challenge, but I love to step out of my comfort zone as a photographer with that said lets see how to score this.

rx7dude It's a Beautiful picture, just not long exposure by looking at the clouds. I see some darks areas also which lends to tell me its not HDR. Still its awesome picture.

Alexander.Of.Oz I do love a Black and White Long Exposure HDR. The clouds look like its coming towards me you have movement in the picture, I am trying to make out if those are rocks or sand humps if that makes sense.

anotherscotsman I love the colors in this, the clouds moving and colors are pleasing and well executed long exposure HDR.

kenoh I had to click on your picture it tricked my mind I thought it was field when I looked closer I saw it was water with a boat on it. and The seagulls on the tree stumps or some type of pylon's was the trick. The clouds to me seem like it was not to long of an exposure. Great photo.

Hughmac I like the tones in this photo. I don't think this is a long exposure HDR picture, I don't see the clouds moving or the sense of movement in it. I could be wrong I usually am.

The only thing thou its not long exposure the clouds don't have movement I would of loved to see major movement in the clouds to let me know this was a long exposure. I love the colors I love the idea and it would of been 1st if there was movement in the clouds.



Thank you to everyone who stopped looked and posted some awesome photos and I do realize now this was a major skill challenge instead. I will in the next day or 2 post one of my Long Exposure HDR photo. I have been checking them out and I love the way the difficulty in such a project takes. I have been studying it for about 6 months now. I posted this as to see if others had a challenge as me in HDR. Now on to the results thank you.

Wow! thank you. podium finish... cool... yeah it was a 30 second exposure but there was very little wind so the clouds werent moving to quickly. Still a newbie at this long exposure lark.

yes I remember now, we have ribbed you for your shouting before... sorry.... :)
