This week's theme is prompted by StrollerEd's final comment on my image from last week's contest. He wrote, "That top spot awarded for an image that stands to remind us of momentous events we surely all hope will be resolved peaceably." I firmly believe that when we are facing troubled times we have to look forward to the real possibility that things can be better. If not, we are inevitably faced with despair. I looked at the master list and, to my surprise, saw that "Peace" has never been the theme.

As always, you are free to interpret the theme as you choose. I don't want any vision I might have to hamper your artistic process.

Standard rules apply.

  • Follow all relevant local laws regarding stay-at-home orders. If you can't go outside, try and take a photo at home or grab one from the archives.
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, check the dates in the title.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends at the end of the day on Feb 2. Since that is Groundhog Day, I will reckon the end of the day according to the time in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

The cesspit of civilization
Peace is walking out to have breakfast in the "morning tacos" stand, with freshly made flour tortillas and home-made stew/casserole while you enjoy the brisk weather, before the pandemic.

This is a peaceful enough scene of everyday folk with some eyes drawing attention to the plaque on the wall to the left.

The plaque marks this as the site of the assignation in June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, said to have sparked World War One. I took this with an iPhone 4 in October 2011, mindful that peace is fragile and cannot be taken for granted, the burnt out shell of the National Library at the Town Hall less than five minutes walk away, yet to be restored after the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian Wars from 1992 to 1996.

I know as soon as I write this I will go along and subsequently like a photo in this thread, mistaking it for the POTD, but as a reminder, no liking or commenting photos until judging is over. ?

Wild Rose And Wind Belt
Another very difficult topic. How to represent an abstract that is currently under a worldwide siege. I was waffling between an image of the Japanese Gardens in Lethbridge and a couple of images of Summit Lake along the Alberta BC border. Both places give me a wonderful calm relaxed feeling. But I was distracted by this. Two kids having a water cannon fight in Flummerfelt Park, Coleman, AB. Image was badly underexposed in an attempt to capture highlight details, but I like how the B&W conversion came out. Having no kids I have very few images of them, but more than a decade later I can still recall the feelings of joy and innocence as I watched those kids just having fun, no worries, no cares, and no helicopter style supervision.
