For this week's challenge: Unique View

The difficult thing about photographing famous landmarks is that a lot of it has been done. And originality is one of the most important traits of a photographer, I feel. It's something I struggle with particularly when traveling.

So, for this week, I'd love to see your unique take on famous landmarks. I really want to emphasize the uniqueness in this. While I love those light-trails-on-famous-bridge photos, the high and wide has been done a million times. Show me something new or something with a new twist!

This is (one of) the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Or a Petrona Tower?



Rules:
  • Be creative and have fun.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • The contest runs for exactly one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)
  • At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

Hi all! Contest will close today but keep the entries coming until 6pm ET. I have a hectic day so I likely won't be able to post much but please keep the cut off time in mind. I'll have winner posted by tomorrow morning, possibly late tonight if I can manage it.

OK! So I really enjoyed seeing everyones submissions to this week's contest. I wasn't sure if I made the right choice in theme. But seeing some of these, I know it was.

Sadly, I am unexpectedly slammed with work so I won't be able to give feedback on everyone this week. The whole point is to help each other get better through feedback :(

butch10x - An excellent way to open the submissions. It is indeed a different perspective of a very famous landmark giving us a closer look at the intricacy of the building. I really enjoyed the leading lines of the columns. I think they are columns?

anotherscotsman - are all of those reflections you? I can't tell if this is a composite or you have positioned yourself perfectly for such a photo. It have the Bean the illusion of a different shape, which I really appreciate.

MacRy - Definitely a different view of the Millennium bridge as most of us have seen the many angles from the top side. Though I would have loved to see something a little more creative in positioning (you've set a high bar for yourself here, pal). Though I guess that is hard to do that when, well, you're under a bridge and your positions are limited. haha.

Ish - I hate you. Kidding. Maybe I'm jealous. This is exactly what I was hoping for. You really captured the essence of this theme. It's very clearly the Shard (if you've seen the Shard before) but I have definitely never seen it distorted in reflection this way. It gives it the feel of coming through a portal. I just love it. That landmark is clearly identifiable but in a way that is set apart from the throngs of tourist photos we've all seen. Excellent work. What building was it reflecting off of?

kenoh - In general, I like where you are heading with this but the photo is a bit noisy. Since it was night time, I think a long exposure to give the water that gloss would have played great with the lighting.

Alexander.Of.Oz - this took my breath away!! I have never seen the SAHMRI building in person but I have seen photos of it, and most certainly not like this. I didn't realize this is what the walls were like! It is a beautiful. The whipsy sky gives it that ethereal feel. Or maybe like I'm on a space ship! The texture in this photo is as beautiful as it is intriguing.

Hughmac - this is a beautiful photo of the castle and I do enjoy the infrared. I feel like it's a scene in Game of Thrones! While it isn't a common photo of the castle, I have seen versions of it in this style. It is still a very lovely photo!

Thanks for comments. Challenge I had was that it was absolutely pouring down with rain and there were 50 people waiting for me to get out the way. I wasnt allowed a tripod to get a long exposure socthis is the best I could get. :-(

Some of the noise is actually just the rain causing blur. Really didnt turn out the way I hoped.

Your right about having limited options of where to stand E3BK. Should have tried harder though.

Great contest E3BK and thanks for the judging and comments. Congratulations to Ish and the other podium places - my personal favourite was @Alexander.Of.Oz.

Not a composite, and that's me reflected in the underside of the Bean on one of the rare occasions that there was no-one else around (dawn in mid-January). The underside is a complex concave surface that's a bit like a belly-button hence the name omphalos (Greek).

Thanks E3BK! Thought @anotherscotsman had got it already when I put mine in, that's a great photo. Congratulations also to @Alexander.Of.Oz, really well seen, I'd no idea how the building looked close up. I assume that's how the building catches the light differently? Congratulations also to @butch10x for a photo that makes me want to lean back and look up! You must have got a stiff neck taking that :) Congrats to to everyone else—lots of good ideas there!

The Shard is reflected in what I assumed to be an office building near the river. I'd just been to St Dustan in the East taking photos and it was a very grey day. Great place to take photos if you're in the area. I used to work near there and didn't even know it existed! Didn't think I was going to get much because of the weather but this reflection took my fancy.

@kenoh — I think that scene is well worth another visit when the conditions are a bit better

I'll get my thinking cap on and come up with a new competition today.

EDIT: Sorry, should have said St Dunstan in the East. Sorry for the typo!

Well done everyone. Some great pictures. Couldn't agree more with your winner. Well done @Ish.
Really liked the idea of this theme, but not shooting much at the moment.
Maybe the next one.
