One of the lovely things about working with large format cameras is the ability to capture lots of intricate details, which often requires a giant monitor or poster sized print to be fully appreciated. So this week the subject is the exact opposite. I want to see images that are as clean and simple as possible. Extending the week by half a day to end on Ground Hog day.

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

Extend the deadline to Saturday, I had the same problem. Not interested in winning again, I just enjoy seeing the entries.

We're down to the last 12 hours. Somehow I didn't think that keeping it simple would prove so challenging.
I tried to shoot something completely minimalistic, but was unable to. Then I remembered that photo from the sand from a few months ago...which I was about to delete ;-)

Some weeks are better than others for participation; you can never tell what's going on in other people's lives, or how they resonate with the topic.

A huge thanks to everyone who entered and there were some entries that deserved a podium spot but had to be left off. I have no doubt if I ran through the routine 3 more times, the podium would look different every time.

@Strider64 A truly simple composition and subject. Minor quibble but I would like to see the subject offset a bit further left.

@oblomow A tough combo to pull off spirals and spokes. Somehow you did it. Going B&W does keep it more or less simple.

@PhilBoogie Definitely simple but I’ve no idea what it is and it doesn’t quite grab me.

@Apple_Glen_UK I like it but since the topic is simplicity I would do a vertical crop of just the three on the right.

@Dockland Doesn’t get much simpler than this.

@Allyance My favorite of all the entries, though it falls a bit long of simple. The sparkle in the eyes sucks you right in and holds you.

@Hughmac Nailed it.

@_timo_redux_ Another one I really like. Since it’s already grainy I see no reason not to crop in a bit further.

@mollyc Super simple, and I am very much a fan of your work. But in this case you’ve run afoul of the personal tastes of the judge. I just like to see at least some tiny portion of an image in focus.

@thirsty_monk I had a bit of an argument with myself as to whether this was truly simple, but that said I do like it.

@TheYayAreaLiving 🎗 You came in just under the wire. And if I buy the dandelion I also have to buy the rock.

Drum Roll:
Third: @Allyance
Second: @thirsty_monk
First: @Hughmac
