I don't know why, but I have a bit of a fascination with the bike share racks that are ubiquitous here in Taipei, and I've sort of made it a habit to play with focus and light whenever I head outside with a camera and see a line of bikes. So let's see what comes up with bikes this week—for the purposes of this contest, let's define "bikes" as vehicles that require someone to do actual physical work to propel forward (so no motorcycles or electric powered things, for example), but no limit on wheel count (so uni-, bi-, tri-, quadri-, quinti-, ……heptadecicycles or whatever are all fair game). No need to be constrained to bike shares either; I've included a few pictures of mine below to get things started.

Untitled 10.jpeg

(Ricoh S3, Fomapan 400)

Untitled 1.jpeg

(Alpenflex IIS, Ilford XP2 pushed 1 stop; shot at the same place as the previous photo)

Untitled 24.jpeg

(Nikon F5, Kodak Ultramax 400 pushed 2 stops)

Untitled 12.jpeg

(Nikon FM, Ilford HP5 pushed 2 stops; shot on the Gornergrat Railway in Zermatt, Switzerland)

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

Contest ends July 2nd at 9 a.m. Taipei time (UTC+8) —which is July 1, 9 p.m. Eastern time (UTC-4)

@Chuckeee : I’m interested in what’s in the picture. Is it an illuminated road sign, or a decoration of some sort? It seems to be quite large, since it looks like there’s a person standing in front of it.

@Strider64 : I had a chuckle when I saw this. Did the cyclist keep going on, or were bikes not affected?

@_timo_redux_ : Looks like this was shot on 120 film (Kodak Gold maybe?), if I’m not mistaken? I’ve always struggled to capture movement when I’m out and about with my Hasselblad 503, since it always takes so long to get the aperture and shutter speed set up. Nicely exposed, nice dynamic feeling in the composition.

@C0ncreteBl0nde : I was hoping for something like this to pop up! Literally, this looks a a bit like a bunny popping out of a bush. I got a chuckle out of this one as well, from the whole out-of-place-ness of the bike in the picture.

@mollyc : I love the color composition in this one: subdued yet with just the right amount of brightness. Judging from the posters, was this shot in Munich?

@squawk7000 : Same as above, I really like the colors in this one as well—not just the bikes, but also the little sliver of a tram door (I’m guessing it’s a tram door?) in the background. Could have equally suited the “seeing red” theme two weeks ago. I don’t know if it’s the angle of the shot, or the way the bikes are actually positioned, but it does convey a sense of flying.

@thirsty_monk : Really nice composition. Did you set the bike there, or was this a scene you just happened to pass by? Either way, I like both the layout of the scene, and the subtle color contrast between the grass and the bike’s red body.

@mtbdudex : As someone who sometimes struggles riding on paved roads, I can’t imagine how to ride a bike in the snow. The colors of the four coats happen to strike a balance between bright and dark, and the bit of lens flare from the sun adds a bit of color to the sky as well.

@lkalliance : Got a chuckle out of this one as well. Nice composition, a really cute moment. I wish I lived somewhere where there are horses!

@Janichsan : Brings to mind some of the nightmares of my college days, since everyone went about campus on bikes, but there were never enough spaces to park them, and we’d often have to untangle a similar mess of handle bars to get out own bikes out—and by then we were already late for the next class! Personally, I might have shot this with a fully open aperture to create a really shallow depth of field, but that’s just my preference.

@oblomow : Ditto as above, a nightmare scenario to try and find one’s own bike there! But I’d rather live in a bike-friendly place (judging from the sign in Dutch, I’m guessing this is in the Netherlands?) so I can ditch my car. I love how just that one bike in the front that’s almost falling over has a hot pink paint job.

@someoldguy : A reverse tricycle parked at a bicycle parking post. I’ve never seen a reverse trike like this here in Taiwan, although I have seen them on the road when studying in the States.

@cogi0490 : Putting aside my Leica envy for the moment, an interesting decorative display made from old bikes, and the fine grain of Porta 400 looks really nice. I have a few rolls of Porta in my fridge; this has inspired me to pop a roll in one of my cameras for my next hike.

My soft spot for film photography notwithstanding, here are my top three:

3rd place: @lkalliance
2nd place: @_timo_redux_
1st place: @mollyc

Oh, wow, thank you! Congratulations to @_timo_redux_ and @lkalliance also!

Yes, my image was taken in Munich. I probably also took a film photo of it on one of my misloaded rolls, but we'll never know!

Will put my thinking cap on and be back with a new topic this afternoon.

Thanks @piatigorsky for you kind words. Some cracking photos from the other photographers entries. Well done all.

My photo was taken in Glasgow’s museum of transport, hence the tram :)
The exhibit celebrates a well respected and famous make of lightweight bicycle from Scotland. Two of my brothers rode them, which I used to borrow and became very practiced in falling off.
