"[var1] PARK-[var2]"?

OK, it's probably pretty clear I'm not a programmer, but this week, we've got a theme with variables.

This week's contest asks you for pictures with a theme of "park," but maybe also a little more:

Maybe [var1] equals, e.g., "national," "city," "evening," "car," "ball," "out of the," etc.
Maybe [var2] equals, e.g., "ing," "ed," "lane," "way," etc.

You don't have to use both variables, or even one, but whatever you do, please tell us what version of "PARK" in a caption to your photo.

Finally, the theme is a jumping off point. This isn't a contest to see, e.g., the "best" e.g., parking garage, though an evocative picture that happens to include a parking garage is definitely in the spirit of this contest.

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends 11:59pm EDT on June 13, 2023.

From my 2014-10,000km road trip. A slight variation of one of the images from the Arches Slide Show.

Thanks for everyone's entries.

@Strider64 A nice distillation of the week's challenge. Good dog. I like the lead disappearing off stage left; I wonder what's captured the dog's attention opposite.

@OldMacs4Me Like the foreground wood / background arch juxtaposition; the shadows and I'll imagine being really stopped down really lend this picture a sense of 3D-ness. Points subtracted for the punny caption; points added for anything that puts fantastic Arches in people's minds.

@ovbacon The fun "why do we drive on a parkway but park on a driveway" twist. Cool period (bat?) car; one wishes the period-people weren't falling out of frame. The askew lamppost and willy-nilly framing suggests Gatsby and ilk have been at it again.

@walkbutneverun Easily wins best caption. Something about the solo car -- the only touch of vivid color to boot -- has me asking, did something happen?

@AppleKarma Looks English ... one cannot forget the outsided influence of English park and garden design throughout the world ... all that lawn fronting an impressive estate. But foregrounding the blossoming tree makes the people like little insects and the estate a sandcastle; indeed the blossoms substitute for the gray sky. Nice picture.

@mollyc The creek, the bridge, the allusion, perhaps, to Giverny -- but more the parks as a little portion of the wilds brought within our reach. Nice; I want to see where the trail goes.

🥈: @ovbacon

Can't be sure but I think you put me in third, or perhaps it was @AppleKarma? Not at all sure as the emojis did not come through.

Given my admitted flagrant abuse of the powers of PhotoShop, dead last would not have surprised me. Extreme depth of field is courtesy of the very short focal length of the old Olympus stylus 3 waterproof camera that tagged along on that trip. With a focal length somewhere between 5 and 20mm it's difficult to get anything out of focus.

Those old CCD sensors had their issues with warm-up time, shutter lag and any ISO over 100. That said they took impressive images when you stayed within their wheelhouse.

Anyways thanks to everyone for some solid entries.

Thanks for the mention in 2nd and yes it was gatsby event (for many years I was on the board of the Art Deco society of CA who put up a Gatsby event) and many members own vintage cars and memorabilia/clothing to make the event look like stepping back in time..

I should've given some thought to the idea that a guy with handle "OldMacs4Me" may not have (the latest?) emojis in his setup; apologies. You got bronze for a solid picture.

Thank you so much, it's the first time that I'm winning at this contest. I did try my best to start the new topic, if something it's not right (maybe the links are not working), I hope someone can help me fix it. Thank you again, I was not expecting to win!

Also I did try to update the master list, but I don't know how to do it. Molly, maybe you can help me please? Thank you!

Nothing wrong with using emojis, BUT....since their meaning may not always be immediately or clear at all to the viewer, or if they are viewing the thread on a small screen, the emoji itself may be just a tiny image, hard to decipher any meaning, it is usually considered helpful to also use words along with the emojis: i.e., in this case: Bronze, Silver, Gold.....

A "golden oldie" here with a reasonably large monitor and I had to peer at the three emojis a couple of times, even enlarging them for a better look, but still it really was only through using the context in which they were placed and the colors of each that I figured out what they probably meant.

Emojis are cute and fun but words actually convey meaning.....

I must admit that I didn't understand it, either, and whatever emojis were used didn't show up on my computer's screen.

In fact, I only worked out who had won from reading the subsequent posts to the emojis, although I did manage to see the cup, and assumed that this may have been the contest's actual winner.

I agree with @Clix Pix: Words convey meaning, and words plus emojis tend to work best.

Use words.

It's one thing when you're using emojis provided by the site. Something entirely different expecting them to reside on everyones computer. Maybe pulled from a specialty font? Kinda like sending an RTF file and expecting the receiver to share your favorite font. Might happen but not at all guaranteed.

This is what I was seeing.
