With my recent medical issues, and some POTD posts, when searching for a subject, "Medical" just stood out. I don't think we have had it in the past. Post something medical that has some meaning to you. It could be professional, like my military insignia as a medical officer, personal, as a patient, or anything medical related. The choice is yours.



Please remember that these standard rules apply:
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced. In keeping with our most recent tradition, violators may be awarded first place. Henceforth this shall be known as the Molly-ing rule in honour of our friend and fellow perpetrator.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, please check the title or description.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends on June 4th.

A few years ago my mother had an emergency heart valve replacement after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I wasn't allowed to take photos of her in the hospital (although...sshhhh....I did anyway, but I will never post it anywhere), but I did really love the artwork in the lobby. The name Reid Heart Center comes from the donors, Walter & Betty Reid, and Walter's father founded the Charms Candy Co., who make Blow Pops (lollipops with chewing gum in the center if you don't have those on the other side of the pond). The glasswork is a play on the lollipops. I wished that I had had a real camera with me to take a better photo, but I knew better than to take a big camera in and out of a hospital. I honestly don't even remember if I took a real camera in my haste to pack and get to my parents.

Last Hospital I worked on, Final Review. I designed the Zoned Paging System and produced all the Communications Systems contract CAD drawings.

This topic piqued my interest, especially as a few days ago I woke up with an extremely red eye. I had no discomfort or loss of vision and it was a family member who commented that "something wasn't right!" They were correct as the problem was with the left eye.......?
A visit to the local opthalmologist the same morning resulted in a "nothing really serious - most probably a virus infection" comment, together with a prescription list, items of which shown below. Just as well both eyes weren't affected.........
Fortunately health care here is first class. I'm completely reimbursed for the specialist visit, and the prescription items are also fully covered under very modest insurance cover.

Where has the time gone! Thanks to everyone who submitted a photo. It is always difficult to choose a subject as in the back of you mind is…oh no, will I have 100,000 entries? What a relief, a very manageable number. Now the hard part, reviewing each.



@mollyc – Hospitals an cameras are kind of funny but now with the phones can be quite stealth as you noted with your mother. A very pleasing entrance and décor with calming colors. Understandable you have the slant on the wall, but as a way to improve – if you had enough area below the sign – would be straightening the verticals.

@TheYayAreaLiving - Interesting. I like the approach which appears to be personalized with the “Welcome” script and presume the blacked out area was the name. Hopefully it didn’t say “Next Victim”. Almost too inviting.

@Allyance - A little Deja vue. While my clinic was one of the out building at Maxwell AFB, during a tornado warning we had to evacuate to the hospital. I am standing under the ER canopy looking at a break in the clouds with the sun shining through. Suddenly, up pops the 1:00 flight from the nearby Montgomery Airport, threading that cloud opening. That plane had to be loaded sitting on the taxiway tarmac during the entire storm to time hitting that cloud break. Photographically, nice with the low sun giving evening (or morning) lighting. Could probably lighten the shadows to show a little more detail.

@Clix Pix – Love the detail and all the dial complexities. That reminds me, I received a text from my optometrist that it has been a year and time for a checkup.

@oblomow – Interesting angle as you are where the general public would not be allowed. Assume you were assisting with loading a patient on and it was taking off to get the underside like that. Arrival would probably be standing back further, waiting for it to land, and a more profile view. While the registration letters only designate it as a Netherlands aircraft (PH), but at least got the two medical insignia that shows it is a medical helicopter. Thankfully, I’ve never had to ride in one. Very interesting.

@zilin_huang – While obvious from your narrative it was in the wrong section, I intentionally kept quiet. So many plants and herbs are the source for drug development. I didn’t want to point that out and suddenly have a bunch of cannabis photos.

@stillcrazyman – I like this. The colors and tone with the bottles draw you in to wonder what each elixir would have been used for. Question about removing the pipe which would clean up and remove a distraction, vs. keep it as it is consistent with the era.

@CooperBox – Interesting story and layout with the vials. Sincerely hope you didn’t need all of them. As a snapshot, it shows very good lighting and no distracting shadows.



Again, congratulations to all, and I don't profess any specific insight as to order as all were great.

A little background on the three photos that got the topic started.
1) That was actually a commercial shoot I had with a variety of photos, interior and exterior, as that center opened.
2) Myself as a patient. Had to take a picture of that hospital meal, each of which was surprisingly good.
3) The medical insignia on my Air Force uniform. While I will ignore the ribbons, to the astute eye, there is actually a Navy ribbon on the Air Force uniform. People generally refer to the caduceus as the medical symbol, but that is two snakes entwined around a staff with wings at the top and carried by Hermes in Greek mythology. It is used by the Navy and Public Health Service. The symbol for medicine is the Rod of Asclepius with the single snake around the staff. To identify the Corps (specializations) within the field, with the exception of doctors which is the pure symbol, letters overlay. N for nursing corp, D for dental, V for Veterinarian, M for Medical Admin, and unique to the Air Force, S (Biomedical Sciences Corp) are all the specialized fields - PT, pharmacy, psychologist, etc. The other branched combine M and S into a single Medical Services Corp. The star at the top means senior practitioner with years experience.

Congratulations to Stillcrazyman, Oblomow and CooperBox! (Breathing a sigh of relief here, too!).

I shot my photo one day last year when I was at the ophthalmologist to be seen for followup on treatment for an issue I'd been experiencing with one eye. Instead of seating me in a darkened room this time, since I hadn't needed or had drops to dilate my pupils, the assistant left the room lights on and I found myself fascinated by the optical equipment around me that I could see more clearly since I wasn't in the usual dimness. I couldn't resist, just had to pull out the iPhone and take a few shots.

I absolutely had to take a closer look at the label for the "Magnetic Elixir". At the upper right it says, "Contains 85% alcohol".

No wonder it's a "Miracle Cure-All".

Just a note for everyone. Ever wonder how I closed the contest at 6:28...then had full written results minutes later at 6:41?

What I found really helpful was setting up a MS Word document and do a write-up on a couple each day as they are posted. Then at the end, it was only a matter of reviewing with final edit, copy paste. Not certain if the "@user" copied over as a link so I re-typed them and also wrote the narrative for the final 3 selection...then posted.

Hope that helps - even if don't do nightly but two or three times during the week - so don't have all the work at the end and feel overwhelmed.

i do that sometimes but sometimes i get behind.

re: my photo being skewed… i took it with my phone and i did actually straighten it in lr with the transform panel. but just poorly (or rather too quickly) composed while being anxious. 🙂
