Weekly Photo Contest: Nov 27 – Dec 4: Tradition

The topic for this contest is Tradition. Show me a tradition of your family, locale, country, religion, anything.

The rules are:

• The photographs must be of your own creation.

• Explore, get creative and have fun with it.

• You may only submit one photo per weekly contest round.

• Please do not comment on any photos until after the judging has taken place.

• The contest runs for one week, starting NOW!

• At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as they possibly can.

• If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline for close, then a vote will be carried out to select a winner. This will be based on the number of "likes" each image has. In the event of a draw, the second place winner from the previous week will choose the tiebreaker.

• The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

Fireworks are traditional worldwide, but us Utahs get to enjoy them twice in the summer: once for the Fourth of July and again later in the month for Pioneer Day. My wife and I have a tradition of not buying fireworks because we hate to see our hard-earned cash go up in smoke. There are always others who love spending hundreds on fireworks, so we enjoy watching theirs.

Almost every year we go as a family to cut down a Christmas tree. We've only missed one year in the past 6-7 when my daughter was really ill. We plan to go on Saturday to get this year's tree. We won't have snow this year though.

This might be a place holder.....

The first time I ever commissioned a piece of art was in 1979 when I was living in Jerusalem. It is an oil burning Hanukkah menorah made of beige and green Jerusalem stone. The beige variety is the most common and is what makes Jerusalem look gold at sunset. The green variety is pretty scarce.

This is the light of the menorah reflected in my table.

@mollyc I love this image for several reasons. 1) Snow images can easily turn out gray if you don’t know how to shoot them. You obviously do. 2) I have 100s of pictures that record what many might think are ordinary, even boring, events. This could be one. “My feet are cold!” “You said we were gonna have hot chocolate!” (Not the girls in your pic, though.) Like wine, images like this improve with time. 3) It’s an image I wouldn’t mind stepping into (despite the snow, which I’m not fond of). Bravo.

@akash.nu What an ornate statue. I’m surprised they let a camera inside. I suppose the heads represent those who have passed on. I love the bright colors.

@tizeye So odd to see people in T-shirts and shorts looking at Christmas decorations. Even in Central California we usually looked at decorative house from inside our cars. It does remind me of our family traditions, driving around looking for the right streets. Good memories.

@deep diver A beautiful abstract image with special meaning behind it. It took me a while to get the pun… but I did count the number of lights.

@malofx A stunning headdress and a stunning image! The detail is impressive. Do you think she was wearing colored contacts? If not, she has Hollywood eyes.

@Clix Pix I wouldn’t want to be that Santa. Looks freezing. My wife and I ended up at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco one Thanksgiving and watched them light a big Christmas tree. Channel 2 was there as were several “angels” walking around on stilts. A local custom, like the one in your picture. Your image led me to my memory.

We didn’t get many entrants this week but I enjoyed them all.

The winner of the contest is @deep diver. I loved the story (Full on ancient tradition) and the abstract interpretation. Congratulations and good luck with the next contest.

Wonderful pictures from @deep diver and @mollyc - very impressive, - those were my two favourites - @deep diver's for the lighting and composition, and @mollyc's for lighting, composition, and indeed, lovely and seasonal subject matter - and judging that was respectful, thoughtful, and fair by @AllergyDoc. Terrific topic, too.
