We've been watching Ted Lasso, so soccer has been on my mind. My sons all played when young, only one stayed with it into high school. My wife's two daughters played into high school (but not through). I bought a 200mm Nikon lens so I could get the shots I wanted; I sold all my good gear (the 200, a 90mm Tamron macro, a 50mm, and the 18-200 VR zoom) and my D80 when there weren't any kids around to shoot. I offloaded most of my soccer shots (I have 100s) onto an external hard drive, keeping only a few in Photos. There's really nothing particularly artistic about most sports photos, but they can be quite humorous when action is frozen like this (the "patty-cake" photo):

Standard rules apply:
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest but you can point the members at the internet for a contextual bio image to illustrate your mimicry.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, check the dates in the title.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends 22:00, , 2021 Mountain Time.
Here is another, taken with my wife's Nikon D40 with a zoom that went to 300mm:

Not all shots have to be of players. This is the oldest girl, reffing. A surprisingly well-paying gig for that age. She saved it all and paid for something quite sensible (that I can no longer remember—I would have blown it all at that age).

The contest is open to any sport! Doesn’t have to be shots of the actual game, it can be something as simple as pennants displayed about town, or sings posted in shop windows. Anything you’ve actually taken a photo of.

Good luck!

Well, I actually took photos at a charity football match a couple of months ago. If I put one of them up I might be one of the few with anything on offer.

Perhaps reconsider the theme of the challenge and widen it out to include all team sports?

Cheers :)

Contest is closed, thanks for taking time to post an entry.

@daimos Freezing action is job #1 in most sports photography. The expression on the guy about to dive for the ball is priceless.

@Hughmac Your shot made me recall the time when I decided soccer was likely the best sport for everyone. Unlike baseball, the love of my youth, generally no one is standing around doing nothing most of the time. I know this can happen with soccer when teams are unevenly matched. Wait a minute, I forgot about basketball, the love of high school into adulthood: everyone is moving all the time. There are only 10 on the court, however.

@oblomow What fun! Travel AND sports, 2 of my favorite things. I don't suppose Capoeira is similar to Brazilian jujitsu?

@tizeye I played the tenor sax until high school, when I quit because I thought I was going to be a sports star and needed to focus all my energies on baseball and basketball. When it was announced our high school marching band had been invited to march in Vienna, I tried to weasel my way into the band. My good friend Ralph (drummer) was going and I was jealous. Once Mr. Schneider heard I didn't own a saxophone, that was the end of that.

@Laird Knox This is what's happening while the game is on, isn't it? Sad thing is, you've passed out before you can get a good biceps workout.

@mollyc It's almost as if you got them to pose for the shot. I suppose one of those helmeted kids is yours, or perhaps a nephew or friend of a child. Love the duck shorts. I don't think I could have worn those at that age, at least not outside of the house.

1st: @mollyc Technically the best shot, in my opinion. They play lacrosse around here, but no one I knew played it in California. Every patch of green grass large enough was occupied by soccer teams.

2nd: @oblomow That just looks like a great memory, and a great time. Win or lose (though I'm sure she wanted to win).

3rd: @daimos I'm betting the guy didn't return the ball.

Whiskey is a sport, right?

(No, this isn't a real entry.)
Yes, tailgating before the game on football weekend! Come to think of it, the mutes were out of the trumpet case, the alcohol was in. While the stadium was "dry", lets just say the post game show was interesting. Ah, those were the days.

oh, wow, thank you! shows what you get with a last minute entry! ? ?

actually the ducky short kid is my own, albeit about six inches shorter than now; this was from two years ago when he had a "fall brawl" of a series of round robin games all day long with other leagues. generally for lax, the louder the shorts the better. ?

i will be back tomorrow with a new theme!

Actually this was a bottle share event. There may have been sports ball on the TV but everybody was talking whiskey. There were about a hundred people and everybody brought a bottle to share. No way you could try them all and there were some amazing picks there.
