This week's contest theme is "Mood". I posted some pictures to Flickr yesterday and I got my first “Explore” invite - so so happy! The picture was inspired by the look and feel of some of the images on here so thank you. Also, I am feeling a bit drawn to pictures of fog right now. I am thinking long exposure, dark and ominous - very moody.

On this note, the challenge this week should you choose to accept it, is to capture a mood in your image, or not… Show me an oppressive weather image or a light hearted sunny day in the park, show me a deteriorating urban scene or a child laughing. Think laterally.

Above all, just have fun!

Rules:
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • Be creative and have fun.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • The contest runs for one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)
  • At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
The contest will close on October 9th at 8 AM GMT

Enjoying the Mud

Hi all, I didn't post due to some circumstances for a very long time but happy to have an image, at least a placeholder one, for this week's contest.

A shot from a recent Spartan Race Beast in Liberec, Czech Republic and one of my friends enjoying the race despite mud everywhere, a barbed wire and water coming from a fire hose.

Is "other worldly" a mood? ;)

Edit: Hmm, the FB post is only 412 pixels wide. I'll post a better version from home.

Philadelphia.
This young man was a very good high school athlete. This day, he was hurt pretty badly in a losing game. He was back on the field a couple of weeks later.

OK, let's kick this off. So this week I was looking for mood in the atmospheric sense, capturing a feeling within an image.

I think we have had another week of great entries for me to consider. Thanks to all for putting your hat in the ring and having a go. I know this weeks contest wasnt the same level of torture as last weeks so hopefully a welcome rest.

So onto the comments.

@tomnavratil - A welcome return from you. Great to see you back. Hope you are back on track and the circumstances that kept you away have now passed. I like this image. We call this Tough Mudding here in the UK and if I am right, that is slightly electrified wire they are crawling under. A great capture of people enjoying torturing themselves and a great shot of the lady having fun - why people think this is fun is beyond me but hey! what do I know?

@AlexH - Nice. Save the last dance for me. A lovely grab of a couple enjoying their own company, dancing like no one is watching. I truly hope my wife and I enjoy a moment like this when we are in our Autumn years. Having said that, I better learn how to dance first. Nice exposure, nice leading line and crisp detail. I would say the mood is content in this one.

@oblomow - Intriguing image. I stared at this one for a while and scared of the dark sprang to mind. The way the shadows play to the atmosphere is great. I like how you have the ghost image there but I do feel that as the ghosting kind of makes the image, then a tighter focus on it may have added something. Nice detail, nice lighting, makes me shiver just looking at it.

@Jonesy135 - Welcome aboard! Nice first shot. I am a sucker for a nice blue sky and this delivers that, I like the crispness that the image brings, makes me think of cold fresh crisp mornings - probably as I was out in one this morning! I love the way it makes the air look fresh. The dogs are great, excitement in their faces nicely done. If I were to make suggestions and I am a learner too so as usual feel free to ignore me, maybe I would have taken the dogs on the left out of frame, their backsides dont really add to the image, and maybe turn to the right a tad to get some of the sled in for context? just suggestions, as I say, feel free to ignore but nice and again, welcome.

@dwfaust - I think we have seen this one before, a nbice capture of the moment between a new husband and wife (?) A lovely moment. I remember my moment like this like it was yesterday. Of course immediately after this, our first dance, I forgot my steps and made a mess of it and my wife takes any opportunity to wind me up about it since! lovely you can see the connection between the couple and almost feel their love for each other. At times like this we might actually think there is hope for the world yet.

@Laird Knox - I like the 1/3 2/3 split on this one. I really like your imagery, it gives a scifi look to otherwise ordinary scenery. This one in particular is very compelling to look at. I really like the lighting and the exposure of the sky. Very nice.

@Alexander.Of.Oz - Nice atmospheric shot enhancing a feeling of claustrophobia and cramped surroundings. An ominous back alley where you really wouldnt want to have to traverse yourself at night. Nice lighting and colour palette. Not overly saturated adding to the urban grunge feel.

@anotherscotsman - Fantastic example of urban decay. Unfortunately those of us who live in the cities of the north built on the riches of our rivers and mines, are feeling less fortunate these days. A somewhat sad yet strangely picturesque representation of the canals and what was. Lovely rendition of texture and shadows. Harsh tonality and the longer exposure add to the mystique and the feel. Lovely.

@deep diver - Wow you can almost feel the disappointment and the sadness of being on the sidelines here. The eternal fear of the athlete, taken out of what you love due to injury. Nice dark mood capture of the hacked off at sitting this one out. Nice.

@koilvr - Moody weather. I asked for and got it. Nice capture though I can't help think that maybe an exposure boost would bring it out a little and make it pop. Fantastic capture of a moody storm.

@Hughmac - I think we are seeing a new trend and style in your images! Now you have discovered the joys of long exposure and HDR, you are off and running. Nice image capture and you havent over done the HDR at all. Very nice.

@Cyclops62 - Fabulous capture of low tide. The sadness of the boats just waiting to be floated again. A feeling of what was and anticipation of what is to become. This reminds me of a painting. The name of which escapes me right now.

@MichalTMartinez - Nice. Nice capture of boredom. I spend countless hours in this very position on the way to or from work, trying to wish the miles away so I can be where I am trying to get to. Cloud cover is such a beautiful thing to see from above! Lovely lighting.

@Apple fanboy - Lovely, lovely capture of aggressive mood. I am sure it was just letting you know it didnt like your camera choice, but the texture in the facial fur and the detail is fantastic. Nicely done.

@MacRy - Yes, very nice. Another of your trainspotting series. Fantastic capture of the lone commuter waiting for their ride home. Quite the example of the isolation of the city worker. Alone yet amongst many. Great light and good use of shadows and tone.

OK, so... the podium finishers...

Special mention to MichalMartinez for the one that resonates with my work moods the mnost. I know that feeling well.

3rd place: AlexH
2nd place: MacRy
1st place: Anotherscotsman

Congratulations to the winners. Onto the next.

Well done everyone. Some lovely images. Thanks for the feedback Ken. I spoke to the tiger and he said he was a Nikon guy as well. Says they are as sharp as his teeth!
