In the past, I have made the mistake of choosing a theme that was too general...too broad and when it came to judging time, I regretted that. I had a lot of ideas for this weeks contest, but when it came down to it, I chose something a little different: Photos of things that start with the letter P. I believe this needs no explanation or direction: anything you wish as long as the focal point is something that starts with the letter P. No special reason for P, it's just the letter I chose.

I hope you have some fun with this one...let your imagination run wild and let's see what we end up with. It's very possible that this could make my job at the end of the contest MORE difficult, but I'm willing to give it a try. I hope we get many entries and some of you lurkers, get out you camera (or phone) and enter the contest!

I do want to add that on October 18th, I will be in Boise, ID, with my daughter as she gets her chemo, but that entails a lot of sitting around and if I don't wrap it up then, I will on the 19th. My apologies in advance.

As always, standard rules apply:

The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place)
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme
  • Contest ends October 18, 2024, 5:00 pm PDT.

Okay...So, I don't know why I chose the letter P (I honestly think I saw it someplace online), but shortly after I posted the contest (and before the humor began) I thought "Perhaps it was the wrong letter to choose." But, here we are and I think it worked out pretty well. We got some great entries and a wide range of subjects, which was what I was hoping for. I only wish I had a bigger podium, but...onwards and upwards...

@Chuckeee - I LOVE this photo for this theme. The different shapes drawn together in one purpose with the color Pink as another P word, this photo certainly fits the theme one hundred percent. Being from the states, and never having traveled to Bermuda, I've never seen a mail receptacle like this one so that added to my fascination with this photo. Great choice! Post box.

@Strider64 - Before you added the name of the bird in the photo, I was a little confused...was he referring to this bird as a "Pecker"? Or, since I'm not a bird person, I thought maybe it had a name I didn't know that started with a P...which it turns out it did. Nice photo with the bird framed in the trees and the leaves and with the leaves being a color that ADDED to the overall image instead of trying to compete with the Woodpecker's bright red head. Nice and sharp. Pileated Woodpecker.

@piatigorsky - This is a REALLY interesting image and creative idea. I love the idea of taking a "selfie" while on the escalator (I'd be on my head) from an overhead reflection. The detail in the steps is really nice as well. I love it when someone "shows me something different " and this is certainly that. Portrait.

@xodh - Very pretty. Petunia nicely centered in the frame with the leaves and greenery around it. It's a very nice photo, but I wish you'd done something to make the photo a little different from the norm. (Yes, I have a thing about being "Different". :) ) Perhaps you could have applied the 'Rule of Thirds'? I of course don't know your shooting limitations but it's still a really nice capture. Petunia.

@oblomow - Oh here we go! *laugh* I have to admit that if I were judging on laughter and not photography, this image would win first place. Even though I doubt you were worrying about the lighting or the composition when you took this photo, it's still a pretty good image! I like the light and shadow on the snow, but what's really good is the way your subject is standing - legs apart, shoulders slumped and rolled forward, head down..so there is no mistaking what he's doing. Love it. Thank you for posting this for the smiles and laughter it evoked! Umm...P-ing.

@lkalliance - I love this. There is no mistaking the look of pride on the senior woman's face and in her body language as she looks on (and listens?) to the young lady with the book. I'm really at a loss for words about what to say about this photo except that you truly captured a very special moment and the emotion you were trying to convey in the image (and for the contest) comes shining through. I can imagine you enjoying this photo as the years go by. Well done. Proud.

@Snowlover - This is a really lovely photograph. It has all the elements that we are taught in learning photography plus the way the light to the left and the shadowy area to the right fade together with the pine cone as the focal point is really pretty. Nice bokeh, sharp subject..it's lovely. I had a thought when looking at it to critique it "If only it had some drops of dew on the pine needles" but then I thought about how overdone that's becoming (opinion taken from my time on Flickr) and decided this image is just right. Beautiful. Pine cone.

@xJustxMegx - What a perfect P word and such a fun photo! I love the way the Pig has his nose up to the fence in the foreground of the image. I think the chickens behind him really add to the photo (chickens don't start w P but I don't care for chickens so I could probably come up with some
P names for them :) ). I love the fields in the background and the way you've broken up your image with the focus subject being front and center and all the other "farm items" reaching out behind the animals. Great shot. Pig.

@Apple_Glen_UK - Once again someplace that I am not familiar with so I Googled Portrush to find it is a seaside town on the coast of Northern Ireland. Google said it is known for its amazing beaches. This building obviously sits on said beaches and it looks like a beautiful place to visit. I like the architecture of the building and the way it is surrounded by the water, the sand, the people, etc. You've got it all in this image but it works very well and is not too busy. I like to peruse it and find thing I hadn't noticed before. Well done. Portrush.

@mtbdudex - This photo comes alive! Wow! I love the light and the flashes and all the people. It really screams the P word "Party" in one shot. I love the light flashes and just enough color to make the photo interesting. I could't tell you what kind of party it is but I don't have to...the photo speaks for itself and isn't that what we hope for in all out work? Love it. Party.

@mollyc - Molly recently said in a POTD thread that she can look at a photograph and know who took it before she reads the name. Her images are like that for me. The beautiful soft light and deep shadows with the clear focal point makes this shot no less amazing than her other work. I love the way the tree shows through the panes of glass and are those people outside under the tree? The composition with the light and dark and the intricate details in the stone make this a VERY good capture. Panes of glass.

@chown33 - I had to look up the word "placid" to be sure it meant what I thought it meant. It did: "pleasantly calm or peaceful" and this pelican certainly is that. It's a nice combination of light and dark but I wish the Pelican was just a little lighter so I could better see its feathers and discern it from its shadow. A great subject for the theme but it's just a little too dark on the subject. Placid Pelican.

@madmin - Wonderful P words for our theme and a nice shot of the dish of food. The cheese is nicely identified as are the ridges on the pasta. The light is great. I kept staring at this last night while doing my reviews and finally I told my daughter "We need to get some food!". :) Nice shot and perfect for this weeks theme. Penne Pasta.

@someoldguy - P is for Pachyderm and these are certainly interesting Pachyderm. I hope you will tell us more about the story of these pachyderm like where they are found, how they were created, etc. It's a beautiful photo with the brown grained elephants and the light on the greenery surrounding them. Really cool POV. I love the details. Can't wait to hear more about these intricately carved creatures. Excellent entry. Pachyderm.

Okay...now the hard part. This is the hardest winner-pick I've had to date as there are SO many good entries. So judging on photography and theme-related:

3rd Place: @mollyc - Panes of glass

2nd Place: @mtbdudex - Party

1st Place: @Snowlover - Pine Cone

Thank you everyone for your amazing entries; you all deserve to be a winner. I thought we got some really excellent P entries and it was a lot of fun to see what you came up with. As usual I hope that you will all post a little information about your photo for all of us to understand your shot better. I love hearing the what, where, who's about every image.

My apologies for being late with this. Things are a little crazy over here.

aww, thank you! my photo was taken inside the tower of london when we visited in march. so yes, lots of people/tourists hanging outside. the light fell so nicely into the stone building.

congratulations to mtbdudex and snowlover!

My entry is a few of the statues that are part of 'The Great Elephant Migration' . There are allegedly 100 of these , each different , and patterned after an actual Indian elephant . They are (or were , today or tomorrow is the last day before they migrate elsewhere) stationed along 9th Av between 14th St. and Gansevoort Square in Manhattan , plus in a couple of nearby locations I didn't get to . It was pretty neat rounding the corner onto 9th Av. and seeing these things . They occupied several blocks along the Avenue . Better explanations are here: https://www.fox5ny.com/news/100-life-sized-elephant-sculptures-migrate-nyc-heres-where-see

Thanks a lot @C0ncreteBl0nde ! You know how it goes, one of those times eating alone when you reach for the easy option, pasta, pesto, parmesan and pepper.

Thank you for the win and the kind words!
This a favorite photo of mine , but really did not expect to take first.
It is from the giant pine tree that towers over our little cottage. Taken with an old Olympus epl1, with micro 4/3 adapted olympus 70-300 (4-5.6) lens, F/5.6 150.0mm 1/160s ISO-800.

Congrats to @mtbdudex and @mollyc.

I am away from home for a week with no computer, can I ask @mtbdudex to run the next contest in my place?
Edit: I have decided to go ahead and run the next contest from a small screen.

Thank you for the response, love it! There was also another pig but it didn't want to get on camera. I agree that chickens don't start with the P but a Powerful Farm has other animals too.

I didn't really look at the background, I just wanted to a picture of the pig. :p
