Was originally going to pick something obvious like 'fall/autumn' but after looking at the Master List I thought I'd go with something a bit more niche that can still technically incorporate fall shots, just more specifically focused on the on contrast between sunlight and shadow through trees.

There is a Japanese term “Komorebi”, for which no simple English translation exists. Yet it is a distinct phenomenon, that anyone who spends time among trees will have enjoyed. Komorebi roughly translates as “the scattered light that filters through when sunlight shines through trees

I've included a personal example below to better illustrate the theme if it helps. The term 'komorebi' would be used to describe the dappled light on the road/pavement. So would like to see this aspect included in your photo, doesn't necessarily have to be a wide shot either, could be a shot of of any surface where the light has passed through trees to create an interesting pattern.

Contest ends October 18 at 12 am (midnight) GMT.

Please remember that these standard rules apply:
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work. In your submission please specify place taken, and if you have a "title" for the photograph specify that also.
  • This contest runs for one week and a day this time. If in doubt, please check the title or description.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

Look forward to seeing what you all come up with!!

Thanks to all who entered, I know it was a bit of niche topic but glad we managed to get at least 10 entries.

@TheYayAreaLiving 🎗 Really like all the different layers and elements of light scattering going on here, from the surface reflection on the water all the way down to the pebbles underneath. You eyes can easily get lost and wander around in this image.

@lkalliance great starburst pattern peaking through the leaves and the sub surface scattering effect, would be great to see a wider shot of this area!

@kenoh took a few clicks to finally see this photo in all its glory! the black/white conversation works really well, the background almost looks menacing/evil, with this ray of angelic light softly hitting the trunk highlighting the bark texture.

@mollyc such a warm an inviting image, feels like you're instantly transported there. Love the fall colors / use of tilt-shift to frame the pathway and highlight the lighting.

@oblomow stunning god rays and lighting on the subject, a tighter crop would really make this image stand out.

@tizeye just majestic, love the transition from the strong beam in the distance to falloff that just rolls down the hill. composition is great too, really like the position of the bench to add context.

@akash.nu nice use of the ultra wide, really shows off the scale of the forest and draws you into the image. been meaning to visit isle of skye, how long did you go for?

@PhilBoogie this is one image I kept coming back to. there's just something so intriguing, almost abstract about the composition and lighting. I love how the trunks emerge from, what looks like a mountain of sand in the desert and the shadows resembles that of a zebra pattern, feels like it should be framed on the wall or in an art gallery, very nice indeed.

@Janichsan another great image of selective lighting, my camera roll is filled of similar images whenever I go out for a walk and a special bit of light just catches my attention.

@OldMacs4Me nice to see some fall colors coming through, would be interesting to see how this would have looked backlight to the sun for stronger composition.

Third place: @mollyc

Second place: @tizeye

First place: @PhilBoogie

This would have been tough to judge. Congrats on some great entries.

Was within a few degrees of total backlighting. Unfortunately sun was so low I could not properly shade against extreme lens flair and settled for hiding the sun behind a tree trunk.

A fun experiment for me as usually I don't pay attention to the foreground shadows when doing leaf pictures, so thanks for challenging me to step outside my comfort zone.

Darn, wasn’t expecting to win! But now I need to read up on how to create a thread 🧟 And then reviewing your work next week, which will be even more difficult! @skidu Thanks for the kind words, but I must say the photos in this challenge (and then some!) all look so great I was quite surprised to win. I really think your comments on our photos are excellent, well written.

It's evening over here at this side of the pond, and will create a new challenge tomorrow morning (US asleep, Aussies having a drink).

PS: my photo was taken in March, 4pm, iPhone X, f/1.8, 28mm, ISO 20.
