The topic this week is "Friends & Love".
It is because my special friend and love that I have the honor of hosting this weeks contest.

Best Friends 2.jpg

Here we are at Eagles Mear that weekend in October 2004.

On May 9, 1970, there was a ground breaking concert in Rochester NY by Chuck Mangione, The Rochester Philharmonic, Bat McGrath and Don Potter, and Gap Mangione. The concert was called "Friends & Love". Being in the retail music business at the time, I got to see the concert, both nights it was performed. It was amazing, 50 years later, they held 3 sold out repeat performances, still amazing.
Friends & Love.jpeg

I have chosen the theme of the concert as this week's theme for the contest. There have been literally 100's of magnificent photos posted by very talented photographers in this forum. Here is a chance to post your photos that reflect the love and friendship of people, pets and even strangers with the emphasis on the subjects and not so much on the technical attributes.

So dig through your archive and pay tribute to those who hold special meaning to you.

And remember to have fun!

Contest ends October 1 at 12 am (midnight) PDT.

Please remember that these standard rules apply:
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work. In your submission please specify place taken, and if you have a "title" for the photograph specify that also.
  • This contest runs for one week and a day this time. If in doubt, please check the title or description.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

Friends & Love

Listen friends
Take my hand and step outside
Let's look around -
Look ahead -
And into ourselves...
In our minds
Let there be a peaceful glow
And call it love -
Open up -
And let it flow...

Out of hearts, confused by war
Let answers show -
Let's all forgive -
And all begin to LIVE...

Listen friends
Take one night and kiss the sky.
Let's all be free -
Let's join hands -
And feel LOVE...

Chuck Mangione

EDIT: You know, I could swear I took this photo, but looking at it again and looking at the metadata, clearly this was a selfie. Oops!

You might want to swap this out as our rules state that photos must be taken by the participant.

I struggled with trying to decide upon a topic for this last weeks contest. I was hoping for a few more entries, but
I appreciate those who chose reveal the more personal side of their photographs. Everyone is a winner for sharing. I said in the beginning photographic technics were not as important and capturing the emotions in the pictures.

Now, onto the judging:
9 images...

#1. Strider64 Our parents, for those whose marriages have survived 40, 50, 60 or more years can only last because they are best of friends as well as soul mates. My wife and I lasted 43 years, she is still my best friend, but as the song says "sometimes love is not enough". Congratulations to your parents.

#2. Snowlover What pain must be in your heart to share Kirby's picture on the day he passed. Pets have no limits on their love, devotion and friendship for their 'Humans'. So an individual picture of your pet embodies their Friendship and Love.

#3. Lee_Bo What eager and happy pets Maddie and Beans are. They look ready to do anything you want them too. I am sure they are best friends too.

#4. bevsb2 I am so sorry that you lost dog last year, this a great photo of the bond that exists between different species of our pets. Your cat is showing strong affection by tilting it's head and rubbing up against your pup. I have seen example of female dogs that will dive in and take care of a litter of kittens. Makes you wonder why people have such a hard time with someone who is different.

#5. zagato27 We all have posted many pictures of out pets. I wish my two indoor cats were as good friends as Royce and Taz. It is hard to bring a young (8 month) kitten in the house with an older (10 yrs) cat who has been the boss for 8 years. Lot of growling, hissing and swatting at the kitten as she torments the old guy.

#6 uvafan1 I am sure he is friendly, do you fish often? Does he come to watch? Nice photo.

#7. mollyc Hallmark quality photo! This would make a great card for friendship. Kids are cute, fall colors are intense, composition and framing perfect. The young boy doesn't look quite sure about 'The Kiss', the girl is all in. Love it.

#8. lkalliance Cute photo, dogs are eager to please and show affection. thanks for being honest about being a selfie.

#9. cogi0490 It is said that dogs have families and cats have staff! They don't always show their pleasure with their human staff. Your cat looks like my boy Bear, who is a Russian Blue. But your cats eyes are a different color. I have learned that when he sits in front of me with his back to me, that is a sign of trust. Your cat doesn't seem to be pleased about having to pose for a photo, but I am sure he/she is very affectionate, when they decide to.

So here are the winners of the contest, based on my emotions:

Third Place: Snowlover - For sharing a nice picture of a great friend, sorry for your loss.

Second Place: Tie between bevsb2 & zagato27

Each photo show the love and affection animals have for each other.

First Place: mollyc - Although my emphasis was on the love and friendship of the subjects, your professionalism in your abilities was first class. Well done.

The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

Edit: Sorry for all the bold text, it just did that on it's own!

Oh, thank you so much! This is a very old photo of my kids...they look like they are getting along here, but right after this photo my daughter pushed her brother down the hill and we packed up and went home. 😂 but this photo is a favorite of mine, and we actually have a print of it hanging in the house. Little brother turned 15 years old yesterday...time flies.

Will be back later today with a new theme. Congrats to bevsb2, zagato, and snowlover!

I fish often since I retired in January. I like to take my cameras with me for the opportune shot. Thanks for the kind words. I have attached what I call “A Day At The Office”

Thank you for the kind words and the 3rd place finish- I really wasn't thinking about winning or anything when I posted, just needed to share with a kind loving group of people.
Congrats to Mollyc, bevsb2 and zagato27, great shots everyone! :)

You are welcome and thank-you for sharing on such a sad day. We lost Dolly years ago to a cancerous growth on the roof of her mouth. Vets removed it several times, but finally grew into her nasal passage. Even when you know you are going to lose your friend, it is still hard. We had 4 Dalmations, first two were brother and sister. The male died from seizures and a heart attack, the sister from old age. Me moved from CA back to NY in 1990, and my in-laws had gotten us male puppy from a local friend that bred Dalmations. He was registered and had papers. It is customary to give registered dogs a fancy name, he was Beau-jangles from the breeder, we named him Ferguson Beau-Jangles Lord of Barden House. Our historic Cobblestone house was built in the early 1800s by Dolly Barden's family, and is located on Ferguson Road. Dolly was named after her, she was smarter than the other 3 put together!, but we loved them all.
