I was wondering if anybody has an idea how much the optical drive in the 15" MBP weights, including the material that holds it in place?

Not only will you not have any significant weight savings, you will void your warranty by removing the optical drive.

Okay, just give me a second to pull a thousand dollars out my ass.

you seem to be doing fine already if you've got a MBP my friend. The point of my post is that you can sell the MBP and replace it with a MBA if you're so concerned about weight.

I took mine out when I put an optibay in. It maybe weighs as much as a 2.5" drive. Definitely not worth taking it out for the weight savings as you won't notice the difference.

I could see taking it out to replace it with another HD.

For example if you have large storage needs, you could have two internal 500GB HDs.

As for pulling the optical drive out to save weight, the optical drive doesn't weigh that much and it is a hassle to pull it out. Plus, who knows, maybe someday you want to use the optical drive when you are on the road but can't because it has been taken out.

Wait then how will you play rented pornos? The cost definitely outweighs the benefit.

You should remove the keyboard and use voice recognition software instead. Or remove the screen and use an external monitor. That should reduce the weight quite a bit.

The problem is...the MBA cant do much of anything beyond basic use. MLB.TV alone would make an Air chug like hell for me...

As anyone thought of trying to remove the glass to reduce weight? Of course you would need a new bezel like ifixit or whoever does the matte screens, would also reduce some glare I suppose.

Yeah it would probably be a pain and another step closer to an Air but I wouldn't mind a full pro with more airlike weight and size by removing the glass and optical drive.

What's the point? To save less than half a pound and add an extra minute of battery life?

So. Let me get this straight, rip out the Optical drive - 1) You can no longer read DVD / CD Discs 2) Your warranty, void 3) Weight savings - next to nothing.

Anyone else struggling with the logic of OP

Eh, I was considering the same thing at one time. My situation:

1) Optical drive doesn't work (not that I would use it anyway)
2) Warranty is expired.
3) I feel bad carrying around something that isn't useful (more psychological than anything else, but meh).

Decided against it, but I would do it I felt the need for a second internal HDD.

The OP didn't know what the weight savings are, which is why he asked ;) Are you looking for attention?

Thanks all so far. I gather folks know that the weight saving is 1/2 pound. I might consider this or replacing the optical by a hard drive. The optical is a pure weight in my laptop, so even if it weighed an ounce I would consider removing it.
